Fishergate beats Marvinville for the Senate Chairship

March 10, 2020

Two independents. Two former Chairs of Unity. Two Senators. Two winners in the Senate general election who wanted to take their victory one step further.

Fishergate and Marvinville both vied for the position of Chairman of the Senate.

In making his case to his fellow Senators, Fishergate said, "I should be Senate Chairman as I am the most experienced and qualified member of the Senate. I have six months of Congressional experience including four months as Speaker of the House. During that time I oversaw an efficient and productive House of Commons. I have extensive knowledge of and great respect for Congressional protocol. I am very active and committed to Thaecia and have been for over a year, so I will never abandon the position as former Congressional leaders have done. Leading a chamber of Congress is not a difficult job, but it is hard work and requires great organisational skill. Not everyone is made for it, especially over a long four-month term. I've proved during my time in the House that I am."

Meanwhile, Marvinville said, "I should be Senate chairman because I have congressional experience to lead the Senate. I have served in both the Senate and House for a total of 6 months and was an acting speaker of the house for a short period. I have served in leadership positions before in the legislative branch in past regions, like in the LCRUA when I was the head of the council for 4 months. I know how to organize an agenda and to make sure the chamber runs smoothly."

With four votes for Fishergate, and two for Marvinville, Fishergate has won the Chairship, as The Thaecian Journal predicted. There was one present Senator, Brototh, who abstained.

In his first statement to the Senate after getting chosen, Fishergate said: "Good morning Senators and thank you for lending me your confidence to serve as Chairman for this term. I have high hopes for what we can achieve and I expect all of you to work hard, debate bills and vote regularly. I look forward to working with all of you over the next four months as well as with our colleagues over in the House of Commons. I'm confident that together we will work through a lot of bills and achieve unprecedented levels of Congressional productivity"
