Eden Marine High Sails Away
By Charli Mitchell, Tyler Gray-Thompson and Damon Kerr
Eden Marine High students and staff and CYC members at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.
20 Eden Marine High Students and 2 teachers travelled to Sydney on November 9th to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia for a week of sailing.
This excursion is an annual event for Eden Marine High students and staff, this year being particularly special after a tough start to 2020 for Eden with a devastating bushfire season, the town was seriously affected and also the COVID-19 pandemic influencing the livelihood of the small town.
Robyn Malcolm was one of the teachers on the trip and with COVID the excursion was slightly different this year “An extra level of stress making sure we were COVID safe. Normally we can all stay in the rooms upstairs when not sailing, I found it hard to constantly nag that there were too many people in the room. Sometimes we have more contact with the CYC members, especially after twilight sailing but this wasn’t possible as only a limited number of people were allowed inside. Whilst I was concerned for us all to stay well, I also did not want one of us to be responsible for bringing COVID-19 back to the south coast!” said Mrs Malcolm.
Students spent the week exploring the attractions around Sydney Harbour. They sailed on five of the club's Elliott’s which are training class yachts throughout the week with different instructors on board each day. Tuesday was an introductory sail which took students across the
Harbour and around Cockatoo Island. They visited many other spectacular places over the week including: The Spit, Watsons Bay, Balmoral and Rose Bay.
On Wednesday night students were delighted by the twilight series and some were lucky enough to come away with podium finishes in each division, this was also accompanied by RANSA (Royal Australian Naval Sailing Association) twilight sailing on Friday evening to top off the week.
Thursday morning students and staff were intrigued by a demonstration from The SeaBin Project which is an initiative to reduce plastics in our oceans. Many students were interested by this and asked questions for a better knowledge of this action. Shortly after COVID safe groups of 5 at a time were given tours of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yachts.
Overall it was a successful trip had by all, learning new sailing skills and seeing the sights of Sydney. Eden Marine High School would like to say a massive thank you to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia for their fantastic hospitality for the duration of the week.

Cricket is going ahead this season despite the ongoing threat from coronavirus.
This season local A grade competition consists of 9 teams and will be a regular one day competition in the lead up to the Christmas break before the top 6 one day finishing teams split and go into the 2 day competition.
The bottom 3 teams will merge into the C grade competition making it a 9 team one day competition.
The top 2 finishers of the competition will play in the grand final on the 19th of December before the beginning of the 2 day competition.
The 2020/21 season began on the 17th of October,
With Merimbula playing Pambula at Berrambool sporting complex where Merimbula came out on top with their first win of the season. Pambula won the toss and elected to bat but were only able to manage 127 runs before they were bowled out in the 36th over.
For Pambula, both Tom Hammond and Shane Baird were dismissed in the low 30’s which wasn’t enough to secure them the win for Pambula.
Brendan Daley was unbeaten with 68* and Dylan Jordan was caught out for 32. Ash Ponstance was the next wicket to fall for Merimbula but he had posted a handy 25 runs soon wrapping it up with 2/133.
The cricket season has been thriving despite the coronavirus, but rain is proving to be the real trouble, with both rounds 2 & 3 being washed out so far.
