WHY KOREA?

Compared with English speaking countries (like the UK and the USA) or Japan, Korea has lower tuition fees, living costs and also well-prepared scholarship programs for international students.

Korea has been recognized globally for its excellence in education. , Korea is ranks at the top of OECD countries for scholastic achievement and educational competitiveness.

Korea leads the world in advanced Science and Technology

The Korean Wave, which began from Korean dramas and K-POP, has now spread Korean language and culture widely throughout the world. The Korean wave has become part of the global culture shared by people throughout the world.

With Korea noted as one of the safest countries in the world to study in, the number of international students continues to increase every year. In particular, postgraduate students have risen steadily over the past 5 years. Many Korean universities support scholarship programs for graduate degrees and assist in finding job opportunities in Korean companies and academic positions at universities after graduation.

International students enrolled in regular degree courses or language course can apply for permission

to participate in additional part-time activities and work.

Global Korea Scholarship

Purpose

To provide international students with opportunities to conduct advanced studies in undergraduate & graduate programs at higher educational institutions in the Republic of Korea in order to promote international exchanges in education and mutual friendship between countries.

Available Options in Universities

Undergraduate course: 4-year courses at designated universities

Transferring between universities is not allowed. (e.g. Starting studies at the junior year is not allowed.)

Graduate course: Master's or Ph.D. courses at general graduate schools of Korean universities

Number of participants

220 undergraduate, 1,080 graduates’ students (subject to change with any change depending on budget)

Korea Language Training

Grantees are required to take Korean language training courses for 1 year at a language institution located on-campus of the domestic universities. (Those who have attained a Korean language fluency score higher than level 5 in TOPIK are exempt from this requirement.)

SOME DETAILS ABOUT SOUTH KOREA UNIVERSITIES:-

In South Korea there are two intakes in a year i.e. Spring Semester in March and fall semester in September. Universities that are oriented towards international students conduct 30% of their lectures in English Language. Graduate programmes have more lectures in English than undergraduate courses.

Undergraduate courses duration in South Korea is 4 years that is there are eight semesters total two semesters in a year.

Graduate courses duration in South Korea is 2 years.

Mostly public universities does not support English lectures for undergraduate programs but private universities provide lectures in English language.

There are two tracks for students who want to apply scholarship to study in South Korea

1. Embassy Track

2. University Track

Embassy Track:-

There are total 125 seats to apply through embassy track for international students in which Indian student quota is for only 3 students.

Embassy Track applicants must submit their application documents to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in their respective countries of citizenship (refer to Appendix B for the list of Korean Embassies) and can apply to all available fields of study offered by 38 designated universities.

University Track:-

Regional University Track for Natural Science & Engineering Majors

There are total 220 seats to apply through University track for international students in which Indian students quota is only 3 students.

Applicants who plan to apply to GKS through the University Track must submit their applications to the university of their choice.

Notes for ALL Applicants

· All application documents must be written either in Korean or English.

· Documents written in languages other than Korean or English must accompany a complete Korean or English translation, authenticated by the issuing institution or notarized by a notary public.

· All application documents must be presented in their original forms. If an applicant has to submit photocopied documents, applicant MUST have the photocopies notarized, apostilled, or receive consular confirmation and submit those certified documents.

· **** For the applicants who are certain that they will not be able to get their academic documents reissued in the future, we strongly recommend them to submit notarized, apostilled or consular- confirmed academic documents in lieu of original documents.

· All documents submitted to NIIED will NOT be returned to the applicants in any case.

· Application documents must be submitted in the order of the checklist on the first page of the application forms. Each required document must be numbered and labeled on the top right corner. (ex. 7. Certificate of High school graduation)

PERIOD OF SCHOLARSHIP

Bachelor’s Degree Program: 5 years

· 1 year of Korean language program

· 4 years of regular degree program

Scholarship Benefits:-

1. Airfare

2. Settlement Allowance: 200,000 KRW (offered once after entry to Korea)

3. Monthly Allowance: 900,000 KRW per month

4. 1-Year Korean Language Training Fee: Fully covered

5. Degree Program Tuition: Fully covered

6. Medical Insurance: 60,000 KRW per month

7. Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month

8. This special additional grant is given only to GKS scholars in the degree program who hold valid TOPIK level 5 or 6 for the period of exam validity.

9. Degree Completion Grants: 100,000 KRW (offered once)

10. Offered to GKS scholars who return to their home countries after completing their degree coursework under the scholarship program.

11. NOT offered to GKS scholars who decide to remain in Korea after completing their degree coursework
