How to make sticky rice by Amalia W

Do you like to cook delicious meals for your family? Do you like sticky rice, but aren’t quite ready to get take out from a restaurant? Well, today is your lucky day because you can make your own sticky rice! You might be thinking, “It’s probably SO hard to make!” But, to be honest, I have made this rice twice before, and it was a lot simpler than I expected. The only thing that was a little annoying was that it took a really long time. But if you have the time, this recipe is a wonderful thing to make for you and your family to enjoy.

The following items are things that you will need for this meal. You may need to do a little bit of shopping in advance if you don’t have all the needed ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups Sushi Rice/Japanese Rice/Medium Grain California Rice/Pudding Rice

    • I personally used Nishiki Premium Grade Rice, but other brands will work too. You may not have this rice at home, so here is what I would recommend doing. If you happen to have a Japanese supermarket near your house, great! Wear a mask and gloves and go to the store and they will most likely have what you need. That is what I did, but I don’t know of a lot of Japanese stores, so you could go on Amazon.com instead! If you search Premium Grade Rice Nishiki and it should be one of the first things to pop up. If you don’t use Amazon.com, I suppose you could go to a local supermarket with a mask, but it may not have sushi rice, so the first two options would be your best bet. I want to make it clear that you need sushi rice or any of the other varieties of rice I have listed for this meal because sushi rice has a more sticky consistency than normal rice which will make your sushi stick together. However, after a little bit of research I found out that you can use pudding rice if needed. I have seen pudding rice on amazon, although you might also be able to find it at a supermarket.

  • 2 cups water

  • ½ cup Rice Vinegar*

    • I personally use Kikkoman Seasoned Rice Vinegar, but again, other brands will work too. Similar to the Sushi rice, you could get it at any Japanese supermarket. Normal supermarkets are more likely to have this though, so you could check your local supermarket as well. Also, you could order from Amazon.com or Freshdirect if that is what you use.

*Note: On the back of the sushi rice, there may be instructions for how to make it. You could follow the instructions, but the rice vinegar, as you will see later in the tutorial, will help make it even more sticky and add a nice flavor to the rice.

  • 1 tablespoon Sugar

  • 1 teaspoon Salt

How to Prepare the Sushi Rice

  1. Soak the sushi rice in the cold water for 15 minutes.

  2. Bring the sushi rice in a pot to boil.

  3. Reduce heat and cover. Simmer for 20 minutes.

  4. Remove from heat and let sit for ten minutes.

  5. Meanwhile, dissolve the sugar and salt in the rice vinegar in a small pot that is heated on the stove.

  6. Empty the rice into a bowl and pour the rice vinegar solution onto it. Stir and let sit for a few minutes.

How to use the Rice

You can use this sticky rice for basically anything that you want after you’ve made it! Anything from a rice bowl to sushi would be super tasty! If you don’t know how to make sushi or a rice bowl, you can simply Google search it and you will get many results. And whatever you do, I can assure that you will enjoy its delicious flavor!
