Interested in joining the lab?
Graduate Positions
I am seeking a motivated Ph.D. student to join my research group through the Molecular Biosciences (MBS) Ph.D. Program for either the Spring 2027 or Fall 2027 academic term.
In the R-Lab, you will engage in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of veterinary medicine, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
Key research opportunities include:
· Comparative & Functional Genomics: Mapping the genomic landscape and virulence factor profiles of poultry bacterial pathogens.
· Molecular Diagnostics: Designing, optimizing, and validating high-resolution molecular diagnostic tools (e.g., diagnostic and serogrouping PCR panels) to catch emerging disease clones.
· In Vivo & In Ovo Models: Hands-on work with poultry animal models—including embryonated eggs, chicks, and chickens—to characterize pathogen virulence and test interventions.
· Translational One Health: Linking poultry disease dynamics directly to real-world solutions in food safety and global health.
· Science Communication: Translating research outcomes into actionable insights for the scientific community, poultry industry, and public outreach.
· *Opportunities to serve as a Teaching Assistant in Clinical Skills and Microbiology laboratory courses, providing hands-on instruction and mentoring veterinary students while developing academic teaching skills.
In the R-Lab, mentorship is student-centered, active, and supportive:
· Active Learning: You won't just follow a protocol manual—we focus on understanding the "why" behind experimental design, data analysis, and scientific strategy.
· Tailored Development: Guidance is adapted to your unique working style and long-term career goals, helping you transition into a confident, independent scientist.
· Collaborative Environment: Work in an inclusive, welcoming space with a lab layout specifically designed for open dialogue, teamwork, and scientific exchange.
We welcome highly motivated applicants who possess:
· A DVM or master’s degree (MS), with strong research experience in microbiology, animal science, biological sciences, or related life science disciplines.
· A genuine passion for poultry health, bacterial disease, and translational animal research.
· Enthusiasm for hands-on bench work, working with poultry challenge models, and effectively communicating science.
· Spring 2027 Admission: September 15, 2026
· Fall 2027 Admission: February 15, 2027
