Rapping, emceeing, or spitting, is a way of delivering rhythmic, lyrical rhymes typically over a beat. An important component of hip hop, rapping has been used traditionally by members of Black and Latino communities throughout New York City as a way to tell the stories of the members of these communities. Included in many rap lyrics are stories of frustration and protest against the societal institutions that unfairly created environments of poverty in these communities. Our students are encouraged to use rap to tell their own stories of members of their communities.
