In 2025, the Institute of Physics reported that around 58% of GCSE physics students in the UK are currently being taught by non-specialist teachers – this amounts to more than 700,000 students. In England, the government recruited only 31% of its target for new physics trainees in 2023/24. In the same year, Wales needed 67 new physics teachers; just 7 qualified. The specialist physics teacher you’d like in the lab next door, for many, simply doesn’t exist.
I’m trying to change what that feels like in schools.
I read Physics at Lancaster University between 1997 and 2000, completing a PGCE in Secondary Science (Physics) at Worcester University College the year after. Since then, I have spent my career teaching Physics, Maths and Science to 11–18 year olds in England and Wales.
In 2003, I became a Head of Physics at an international school in Spain. I went on to hold two further Head of Physics posts: first at a boarding school in Yorkshire, then at one of the largest comprehensive schools in the country, in Warrington. In 2013, I was promoted to Head of Faculty: Science, leading a large team and securing significant improvements in GCSE and A-level outcomes.
Since 2016, I’ve worked in multi-academy trust senior leadership as Lead Practitioner and Trust Curriculum Lead, supporting staff and students across multiple departments, schools and phases. My work has focused on curriculum and assessment design, teaching and learning CPD facilitation and, more recently, instructional coaching as a powerful tool for teacher development. My mission has always been to help colleagues implement changes that actually stick in real classrooms.
Physics has always been my first love. I’ve recently embarked on a new adventure in Wales, teaching Physics to academically strong students – but the national picture for Physics teaching shows little sign of improvement. That’s why I’ve created this remote support offer. I desperately want our future Physicists to receive the best deal we can give them.
I have had the privilege of working with so many talented and dedicated teachers. I have seen how hard my non-specialist Physics teacher colleagues work to ensure that they give their students the highest quality of education they possibly can. This often leads to them spending a disproportionate amount of unpaid time on planning, marking and feeding back to students.
My goal is to give non-specialist teachers and their students access to what I call a “silent mentor”: a specialist in the background who can provide clarity, resources, marking and feedback, and an extra layer of challenge when it’s needed.
In addition to my GCSE and A-Level tutoring, I offer a range of packages for individual teachers, departments and schools so that you always have a physics specialist you can lean on. Think of me as the colleague you wish you had in the classroom next door.
Have you ever had a question you were afraid to ask?
Have students ever asked something you didn’t know how to answer — and felt you “should” know?
Do you dread Physics lessons because you don’t feel confident with the content or the maths?
Are you a Head of Science or line manager who wants to upskill staff in Physics but doesn’t know where to start?
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re exactly who I built this for.
Please explore the options available, or drop me an email and we can discuss a bespoke package that will suit the needs of your teachers and students.
