The model group started with the idea of creating smaller hobby size projects and has so far focused on static and remote-controlled boats and aircraft.Â
An initial project saw 5 members each build the same design RC balsa wood boat from printed plans, aiming to build up skills and experience at the same time. During an eventful night they were tested on a local farmers dam. A couple had to be rescued after stopping out in the middle, but none sank so that was an achievement!

Since then, members have gone on to build electric RC aircraft including a spitfire, a yellow electric plane and a foam glider which are flown periodically throughout the year. Regular flying lessons and RC simulator time has helped a few members get off the ground, it's just the landing part that needs a bit more work!

Building a Spitfire model
The group purchased a 3D printer and begun experimenting and learning the process of 3D CAD drawing and printing 3D objects. An entire 3D printed model aircraft was made and flown as a group project.
If you're interested in learning about model building, flying, 3D printing, air brushing and 3D design, or you might have skills to share with the group, you're always welcome to come along and join in! See the contact page for session times.
