The Kersbrook Shed was conceived after the Sampson Flat Bushfire of January 2015 due to the number of residents who lost their sheds. It was thought that the community could have a shared Shed to come and tinker away or learn new skills while making new friends or cementing old friendships.
In February 2016, the then South Australian premier Jay Weatherill AO visited Kersbrook to see firsthand the ongoing recovery efforts of the community. In a speech he shared statistics that show after a significant natural disaster, once recovery support finishes, elderly men are particularly vulnerable to slipping into mental health issues. That speech was enough to spur the Kersbrook community into action, and the idea of The Kersbrook Shed was born.
Grants were obtained from The Dept. of Veterans Affairs, CFS and the Adelaide Hills Council, however 75% of the funds were sourced from tireless fundraising by the founding members. The Kersbrook Shed was opened to the community in August 2018, and then officially opened by Rebekah Sharkie MP and Richard Harvey during a ceremony in 2020.
The Kersbrook Shed is extremely grateful for the generous support from many community members and businesses to make the Shed a reality.
