There are a few features to Johnstown that we so frequently see that we often now ignore them but visitors don't and it presents a poor first impression.
This is the the 2nd formal year for The Johnstown Tidy Towns group and we find out what is being planned to improve the area.

Not only does the wind blow every piece of litter into every corner of every estate but the area has being targeted by illegal fly tipping. The focus last year was to make Johnstown litter free and the ongoing fortnightly litter picks are making a tremendous impact in keeping the litter under control.

The Council have helped combat fly tipping and residents are contacting us when it happens and those 'hot spots' previously targeted by dumpers are being monitored,

We don't think it's just a case of providing more bins we need everyone to simply make it socially unacceptable to drop litter on the floor.

To identify the Johnstown area and our participation in the Tidy Towns competition 3 signs have been purchased by Johnstown Tidy Towns and will be installed by the Council at the North and South Metges Road junctions and on the grass bank near the Ardboyne Bridge. Johnstown Village already has their own signs so these will compliment them.

These simply shouldn't be needed but since it only takes one careless dog owner not cleaning up after their pet for a child out playing to get an infection.

The first impression of every area is important and two of the approach roads into Johnstown need improving:

Seasonal flower displays on the bridge itself and the grass banks will improve the entry in a similar way that has been done to the bridge and junction in South Johnstown.

This is an eyesore and the first introduction visitors get of Johnstown when approaching from the Kentstown Road. It's not an appealing view either for the occupants of the apartment block or those in Athlumney Hall who's gardens back onto the property.

The former petrol station has no plans to reopen but the owner has no objection to the group improving the railing and verge with planting.

Not only does the group need funds to pay for public liability insurance simply to go litter picking but improvement projects also cost money.

Funds recently raised from grants and the Smiths SuperValu bag pack now need to become something tangible. To achieve this the group need to engage residents to take part in the improvements being considered.
