May Edition 2018
It's that time of year again to reacquaint ourselves with our gardens, to cut the grass, enjoy the summer warmth, BBQ's and to rediscover if we have 'green fingers'. The days are becoming brighter for longer and the shops tease us with BBQ and patio furniture on display whilst the garden centres are awash with promises of colour.
Here we encourage you to go one step further with potentially the easiest way to successfully grow some food for your BBQ's.
Strawberry Hanging Basket available from Beechmount Garden Centre.
Expect a 100 to 500 fruits per plant and plant a different variety in each basket for different colours, flavours and harvest dates.
Typically harvest late summer and 3mths from planting.
Plant upto 6 seeds per basket separated one week apart for a ongoing harvest. Remove and replace each plant once they've produced crops.
Harvesting is typically 40 Days
The 'cut and come again' salad leaves work very well.
Harvesting is typically 2 to 3wks for salad leaves
Woody herbs are best suited for pots so try leafy greens such as Basil and Coriander.
Chose either single or come again varieties that will repeat crops for at least 3 years.
Remember to fend off the birds and you can freeze the fruits if they produce too much.
