Continuing our series on free local family friendly outings we visited Dalgan Park. Only a few minutes south to Garlow Cross, Dalgan is now the home of the Missionary Society of St Columban in Ireland.

Most of Dalgan's 5 acres of Park grounds are open to the public each day. It's a farm, a spiritual education and administration centre, and also a retirement home.

The impressive college building, built in 1938, sits to the right of the original Dowdstown House and is frequently in use by groups.

On arrival there is a route map of the grounds adjacent to the visitor car park which illustrates the 7km of walks. The routes are gentle gradients and suitable for all ages on but don't don't bring your pets or bicycles since it is an active farm too.

The map shows just 2 of several possible walking routes with the Yellow being only 1km and the easiest 'road' route whilst the Orange route is 4km.

There are 3 distinct areas to experience: Woodland, Riverside and Grazing Fields. For those out for a pleasant long walk all the areas connect up. Roads takes you alongside open grazing fields for cattle and to the cemetery area. Gravel paths wind through the natural wooded area and you might glimpse some of Dalgan Anglers Club as the path flows alongside the tributary river and into the River Boyne.
