For a decade locals have referred to the bridge as either the 'New Bridge' or even the 'Ardboyne Bridge' but the new name of 'St Martha's Bridge' was unveiled without any advertising or publicity, followed by a plaque in late July.
The new name had a few of us 'googling' for the historic connection and we uncovered a few others in the process.

Cllr Francis Deane proposed the name in 2016 when he held the role of Mayor but it has taken a while to be implemented.

The name comes from St Martha's College of Rural Domestic Science which operated between the 1930's to 80's and the grounds are now home to St. Stephens National School and Coláiste na Mí Secondary School.

The Dunville family occupied the neighbouring Sion House in the 1800's which had been used largely as a hunting residence. The Dunville Family have strong connections to Irish Whisky, Hot Air Ballooning, Belfast Zoo and Redburn Country Park. Read More here www.dumville.org

Translates to 'Sion Road' and links the main Dublin Road across St Martha's Bridge to the Shopping Centre roundabout. It leads in the direction of Sion House in the School Campus.

Running North - South through the area it's named after The Metge Family. Peter Metge being one of the Huguenots who lived in Athlumney House in the 18th Century after fleeing France after religious persecution.
