Who am I, and what qualifies me to teach Art & Design?
After twenty years in the Graphics industry, I returned to school in 2003 and began working towards a Single-Subject Teaching Credential in Fine Art & a Masters in Education. I completed all my in-class work in the fall of 2005, needing only my student teaching to complete my mid-life educational pursuit.
This was interrupted in September of 2005 by a job offer to become a Project Manager and Graphic Designer for the largest Public Relations firm in San Diego. I took a three-year break from my studies, until October 2008 when the economy took a nose dive. I was one of three full-time employees to get laid-off.
I returned to school in January 2009 to perform my student teaching and earn both the Single Subject Teaching Credential and Masters from National University in September of that year.
After a year of substitute teaching in the Poway School district I accepted a full-time teaching position at Kearny High School's Science, Connections & Technology Academy. I taught Digital Art & Mixed Media, Visual Art & Design and Design in Mixed Media for three years before changes to the administration led to my classes being dissolved.
Returning to the substitute pool, I worked in the San Diego School District until January 2015, where I was offered employment by San Marcos Unified School District on a Replacement contract at Mission Hills High School. The position was temporary, however, only to complete the rest of the 2014-2015 school year at MHHS.
In the summer of 2015 was re-hired with the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) to teach both Traditional and Digital Art classes at Creative Performing Media Arts Middle School (CPMA). I was excessed from CPMA in October 2019 and reassigned to teach 7th & 8th grade Art at Standley Middle School.
Due to continuing budget cuts, I have once again been informed by the SDUSD that I have been excessed from Standley, and have been assigned to teach Art at Clark Middle School.
For the summer of 2020 I have enrolled in a course to become a Certified Online Teacher through a program called, "Leading Edge Certification," which will qualify me to teach online and "blended learning" classes (AKA Distance Learning).
Personal
I was raised on military bases until I graduated from high school at Edwards Air Force Base. My Middle School and first two years of high school were on two bases in Germany (Heidelberg & Mannheim).
I have three grown children: Erika (33), Jonathan (30) & Alexa, (21).
In my spare time (summers, naturally) I drive across the country to visit them, from San Diego to Virginia, while taking online classes and drawing a lot of cartoons, like the Father's Day Card I made for my dad (top right) this year.
