Whether you’ve moved across the country to pursue your education or you’re a Waxahachie native that wants to venture out and try something new, there are plenty of gems around Waxahachie to try for the first time! We’re looking at affordable places with quality taste and a great atmosphere, some of these are well known and some are little more underground but deserve their chance in the spotlight.

Oma’s Jiffy Burger
Oma’s is a local burger joint with a classic American diner aesthetic and a rich history. It was founded in 1970, making it the oldest on this list by far. But there’s nothing outdated about their burgers that are freshly ground daily. You won’t find any fries here but you will find a quality burger and chips with the option of a classic fried pie if you have a bit of a sweet tooth. Also of note is their breakfast which is served from 7am to 11am and includes a choice of bacon or sausage with egg and cheese on a hot bun.
Hibachio
This Japanese Cuisine spot is a local favorite for the SAGU students. If you’re looking for a reasonable price with an amazing portion size then Hibachio is the right choice. Their most popular menu item is the chicken rice bowl which is a classic that you can’t go wrong with. A little-known secret is that you can ask for their homemade Yum Yum sauce with any rice bowl! This flavor of this stuff is addicting and is the secret sauce that makes this place special so give it a try.
Farm Luck
Most people don’t know about this place, but it’s downtown. They have sandwiches, wraps, salads, homemade ice creams, sodas, sundaes, and whatnot. It has a rustic atmosphere and is placed right in the heart of Waxahachie, perfect for a break from a long day of window shopping in the iconic shop district and seeing the sights that downtown has to offer.
Tuscan Slice
A wonderful Italian restaurant with exquisite dining. It’s great and the food is all made fresh in the wood fire. Plus, it’s Christian owned! You can rent out big rooms for larger parties and it’s two minutes from campus. Not to mention they have free bread that gives Olive Garden a run for its money.
Taco Suave
A small, family-owned taco stand with a quaint patio dining area decorated with atmospheric overhead lights and wall art that adds to the easy going feeling the space provides. It’s honestly worth checking out for the good vibes alone but nothing can top the quality, inexpensive street tacos and a nice cup of elote.
Pop’s Burger Stand
Located in Downtown Waxahachie, this diner serves burgers and nostalgia with old Americana memorabilia from wall to wall. But the atmosphere isn’t the only reason to go to Pop’s; the burgers are delicious and affordable with a single double patty burger costing $6.99. The menu has a lot of variety to offer, a local favorite being the “Low & Slow” burger with crispy bacon, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, and topped with low & slow barbeque sauce.
The Dessert Spot
The name says it all, simple and sweet. Pastries, cakes, and more. It’s all here. Grab a cup of coffee and sit down with a friend to indulge in some tasteful desserts. It’s located on the first floor of the Roger’s Hotel with large open windows letting in the sunlight and a nice view of the downtown scenery. Inexpensive and high quality, this spot is nothing to overlook.
Tomato’s Mexican and Italian Restaurant
Feeling indecisive? Have a picky significant other? Do you just want to enjoy a side of chips with your chicken piccata? Then I know a place for you! It is an ingeniously unique combination. On a single hand I could count all the places I know that have this unique duo of cuisine. In fact, if I were missing four fingers I could still count the places I know that do what Tomato’s does. There is a full-fledged menu with all the things you would expect from their respective cultures. They have sandwiches, pizza, pasta, enchiladas, fajitas, and much more to be enjoyed.
Fresh Market Coffee
Fresh is a local staple for the Waxahachie area. You’ll definitely find them busy with students during finals week and they host local events frequently. They specialize in coffee and pastries and keep a fresh (pun intended) variety of coffee with constantly updated seasonal drinks posted on their chalkboard.
The Ugly Heifer
There is so much to be said about the Heifer’s menu. Their main attraction is obviously the quality beef burgers with a variety of toppings but if you’re looking for something a bit more unique then look no further than the Trailer Trash. As their menu describes it: “fried up and served on a trash can lid just like we did it at memaw’s double wide. Fried pimiento cheese, fried mushrooms, and fried pickles served with our Jalapeño Ranch Dressing”. If that isn’t culture then I don’t know what is. They have such a variety with homestlye plates, shakes, and an array of desserts, all worth trying.
