It was tough turning down a persistent 16-year-old Karthik who had a visison: to create a supportive environment for children who need encouragement the most.
Many were annoyed by incessant questioing, of course—who wouldn't? Then, slowly but surely, he gathered several like-minded individuals who would be willing to dedicate their time and energy into building this organisation from scratch. (Now, the incessant questioning happens in emergency evening calls instead of in a random corner at the canteen)
Contrary to popular (and outdated) belief, it isn't hard to find youths who are willing to volunteer. What was particularly challenging, though, was finding time amidst academics, teenage-hood, and life itself to helping those in need.
Nevertheless, the struggle of balancing studies and also what you really want to do is shared by a community; When you want to help, it's seeing a child's smile rather than VIA hours that feels most rewarding.
Now, we amassed more than a hundred student volunteers. Though sleep-deprived and stressed, we will always give our all when it comes to a child's happiness.
With that in mind, Karthik and his team—Adharsh, Lim Qi, Kaleb, Ruike, and Syaura—now shared the same vision. Supported by an army of youth volunteers, it seems like there isn't a chance of slowing down the impact make on the community.
If it's helping children we want, it's helping children we'll do.
