You should tap the whip on the pig under its jowl to keep its head up and moving. Utilize firm yet gentle movements in the area opposite the direction you would like to turn your animal. When turning, be sure to cross in front of the head as you would in the ring to maintain “piggy sandwich” of: YOU, ANIMAL, JUDGE. The back of the pig should not show a hump so when working one should press down on it to discourage arching of the back. If the pig begins to trot you can tap it between the eyes or on the nose. A pig resistant to walking can be prodded by a light whipping on the area between the back and the loin. Walking and working with your pig is ESSENTIAL to success in the show ring. You should practice driving your animal 15 to 20 feet along with turns at the end of the distances. To ensure good work with your animal it must be socialized to trust people, you in particular. A pig that has not been worked or socialized by its owner will not respond well in a stressful, show setting and is likely to run rampant across the ring.
