Join us for The Grove's 2025 Open House!
Equity, Diversity + Social Justice
At the Grove, we believe education is a powerful tool for social change. Our approach to teaching and learning is rooted in a deep commitment to social justice. We strive to help learners understand the ways in which their personal experiences connect to broader social, cultural, and historical contexts.
We see the entire school as a dynamic learning environment, its a space where students, teachers, families and community members come together through meaningful dialogue and shared experience.
Our goal is to nurture community that can recognize, question, and critically engage with all forms of social injustice.
Environmental Justice
Environmental education at the grove is woven into everything we do. It is about values, attitudes, ethics and actions, rather than a separate subject or an 'add-on'. Environmental education is a way of thinking and learning that cuts across disciplines.
The Grove is founded on the belief that the quality of children's learning and their avility to realize their life potential is intimately related to the health and wellness of their interconnected ecological social environments. As a result, we see sustainability and social justice education as inextricably linked.
Community Activism
The Grove is a community-created school where students, families, educators and community members work and learn together through cooperation, collaboration and consensus. Together, we take on real-world challenges that matter.
Our community-centered approach moves beyond memorizing facts, it fosters deep understanding by helping learners explore the social and environmental significance, of what they're studying. Learning is rooted in authentic, complex problems that require teamwork, critical thinking and collective action.
Through hands-on projects, students expereience the power of working together toward meaningful change.
-Our Core Values Come to Life -
One of the unique aspects of the community is how these values are imbedded in the ways we come together throughout the year including:
Circle: Every day of the school year (except in very wet or very cold weather,) class begins outdoors with all students, teachers, and any caregivers who want to join in.
Parent Led Outdoor Lunch: a daily outdoor lunch so children from immunocompromised families or children who do better with more outdoor time can eat lunch in the courtyard.
Extra curriculars include soccer, basketball, volleyball, soft ball, track and field
Dedicated physical education and visual arts program, and health delivered in an inclusive cooperative way using games to teach understanding of sport and fitness.
The Wild Rumpus: To celebrate the start of the school year – an annual parade, potluck, and party.
Re-Gift Market: Used items from families are organized for a day of “shopping” for the kids to pick out holiday presents for their siblings and caregivers.
Gender Splendour: A week of activities focussed on the exploration and celebration of gender expression, alongside action against homophobia and transphobia.
Peace Week: activities focused on peacemaking, social justice, and community building.
Truth & Reconciliation: a community morning circle to honour the day
Wildflower Stomp: Annual seed planting activity for junior and senior kindergarten
Story and Word Salon: an afternoon for the whole community that celebrates Black joy and excellence.
