Great Oz Adventure Trail
This is an Australian based page and facebook group. International visitors planning on embarking on adventure travel in Australia please be aware we are a remote country with vast distances between medical help and supplies. Seek and adhere to the advice of locals and authorities when planning your travels.
Its an AMATEUR effort, it's free, it's a hobby, it's not perfect, it never will be, it's a constant work in progress. this project is a little organic and underground. If you don't agree with the concept don't use the files. These files/maps require a certain level of competence with managing gpx files, navigational skills, rider skills, independence and common sense. consequently at times certain tracks may not be trafficable, have temporary closures, have outdated or incorrect information. There is a few hundred if not thousand hours of my time gone into this, I do ask you consider this before savaging me for problem areas. I do it as hobby for my own benifit and I'm happy to share it with others that may also benifit from it.
I am happy to update any tracks, roads and waypoints with current information, contact me via private message from the facebook group. Just be aware I need the information in english, preferably with screenshots, coordinates or a gpx file. The more information I can add to the tracks the better it is for everyone. To give it some credibility I will add, with permission the contributors name, date and relavant info or changes to the track notes for each track. Please consider the relavance of the information on these roads and tracks is primarily limited by the feedback I get in return,
Another awesome resource for gpx tracks is Trans Australia Trails. If you download some tracks, have a think about taking the time to upload some of your trips as well in return. What goes around comes around, these things can only be as good as the people who use them make it.
(If you do upload files, try and give some details of the trip date, bikes, tracks and points of interest it makes all the difference having a bit of intel on the GPX route.)

For those lacking in confidence or the above mentioned attributes, there are doyens of the adventure travel scene running great commercial operations far more professional, thorough and caring than this shit show will ever be. They offer exellent options and assurances for unique adventure travel experiences and bespoke routes in Australia. Through no affiliation these include though aren't limited to :
I have made concerted effort to set the main route, a continuous 13 000 Km journey, (excluding the bonus 1800Km Tassy loop) known as "The G.O.A.T" to be suitable for all size adventure bikes and moderately capable riders. It is shown as Dark Blue on the east coast and Aqua down the central states and territories. The file is segmented between the individual maps. Weather conditions, the forces of nature and beauracracy can change difficulty significantly in some sections or hinder progress, but that's adventure riding, deal with it and use your brain. If I get legible intelligence of a problem area I ammend it accordingly on the maps.
Each state has numerous breakout routes off the Main G.O.A.T route, known as "Goatys" these are graded and may or may not be a lot more adventurous options.
The accuracy of the 1-5 G.O.A.T grading system also relies on legible feedback, ride reports and video reports from this ADV community. without this it is what it is.
1 Goat - Good quality bitumen roads
2 Goats - Mixed surface bitumen roads or excellent dirt highways.
3 Goats - Good quality dirt roads with varying surfaces suitable for all size bikes with competent riders.
4 Goats - Mixed tracks/trails suitable for advanced riders confident with slick clay, sand, ruts, hills and obstacles.
5 Goats - Anythings possible, for small bore advanced riders or big bore riders with balls and a ticker to match their bores.
+ symbols indicate some sections may be slightly more difficult however not worthy of a higher grading.
I would suggest if you are anxious by nature and require constant reassurance regarding the difficulty of tracks or roads, don't attempt any tracks rated higher than 3 Goats, bearing in mind even these tracks may still have you shitting the bed and craving a warm embrace in certain instances.
I am slowly adding waypoints to the maps that may be useful POI's, Pubs, Camps etc. I do my best to keep on top of over 40 000 Km of roads/trails and there condition/suitability. I reiterate the accuracy and success of this relies on constructive contributions from members via the facebook group.
My aim is NOT to have every backtrack and trail in this wide brown land documented, some things need to be discovered via adventure, or professional operators commercial ventures. I encourage users to not get caught up in following a line on a screen, but use it as a tool to get yourself to the fringe of discovery, be open to new adventures and seek them when and where they present. Sometimes the line is just the key to keeping you heading in the right direction. All too often I see people 3000Km from home zoom past some really cool shit because a line on their screen didn't take them straight there.
This route has the potential to have considerable bike traffic traversing it, I have made a deliberate effort to avoid areas that may be sensitive to such traffic. conversely I have made equal effort to route through small communities that can benefit from the adventure dollar. If anyone feels sections I have included may infringe on this please contact me and discuss options for diversion.
If you identify a section as a potential problem, there's no need to wage an online slanging match, I can only politely ask you send a discreet private message containing.
A CLEAR EXPLANATION IN ENGLISH OF THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM LISTING CO-ORDINATES OR AT THE VERY LEAST A MAP SCREENSHOT OR EVEN BETTER AN ALTERNATE GPX OPTION.
SHARING OF GPX FILES IS A SENSITIVE TOPIC, PLEASE BEAR IN MIND WHEN USING THESE TRACKS YOUR BEHAVIOUR AND THE RESPECT YOU SHOW TO PEOPLE, LIVESTOCK, PROPERTY AND THE LAND YOU RIDE ON REFLECTS ON ALL OF US BOTH WAYS! THE WEIGHT OF RESPONSIBILITY BEARS ON US COLLECTIVELY TO ENSURE OUR FUTURE ACCESS TO SUCH TRACKS! ALL EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR PASTIME AND UNFETTERED ACCESS TO THESE AWESOME AREAS INTO THE FUTURE.
COMMUNICATING CONSTRUCTIVELY AMONGST THIS GROUP ABOUT AREAS THAT MIGHT NOT BE UP TO THE POTENTIAL OR PRESENT DAY TRAFFIC IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL WHO UTILISE THIS INFORMATION.
The files are broken into individual states to try and keep the file sizes down, they require knowledge of gpx files and how to manage them. There are instructional topics on this page and the Facebook group that will help if you search by G.O.A.T gps topic, also Youtube is your friend here.
THIS WEBPAGE USES A GOOGLE MAPS GPS VISUALIZER INTERFACE FOR VIEWING AND DOWNLOADING THE TRACKS AND WAYPOINTS. AT THE MOMENT FOR MY LEVEL OF TECHNICAL ABILITY THIS IS THE EASIEST WAY FOR ME TO UPDATE THE FILES WITHOUT FUSS.
INDIVIDUAL TRACKS AND WAYPOINTS CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE (HAMBURGER ICON) TOP RIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL STATE MAPS, BY CHOOSING "EXPORT SELECTED DATA"
Please bear in mind this is an amatuer effort, I am by no means a tech wizard and fumbling my way a little with the easiest way to present the tracks/files and keep them updated cost free. I realise its a half busted arse setup, I sort of like it that way. Adventures aren't meant to be perfect. if you look closely at the G.O.A.T logo you might notice the upside down goat, this is deliberate, he's the goat of misadventure, a reminder to embrace the imperfections and make do with what you do have.
Don't be shy to post up Youtube Vlogs or ride reports relevant to these tracks to the Facebook group of sections of the trail you may have ridden, constructive criticism is encouraged. The improvement and current trail reports of these routes solely depends on the involvement of the members of this group.
Please keep the Facebook group discussion to G.O.A.T GPX related conversation.
There are plenty of other groups to dribble on about all that other shit we don't need another one! If its not relavant to The G.O.A.T it will get deleted periodically.
My interaction with the facebook page these days is minimal, it's a hobby not a full time gig for me.
The best way to contact with me is messenger via the Facebook Group. Please understand I may not reply immediately, I have a family and a real job.
DUE TO THE WONDERS OF NATURE AND BEAUROCRACY THIS NETWORK OF TRAILS WILL BE AFFECTED FROM TIME TO TIME WITH CLOSURES. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE, ADHERE TO RESTRICTIONS, CLOSURES AND WARNINGS AND BE PREPARED TO MAKE DETOURS OR ALTERNATE ROUTES WITHIN EACH STATES GUIDELINES UNTIL THE EQUILIBRIUM OF NATURE SWINGS AND AUTHORITIES CATCH UP WITH THE REQUIRED REPAIRS CAUSED BY FLOOD, FIRE, FORESTRY OPERATIONS OR PARKS CLOSURES.
WHEN CONDITIONS ALLOW REVISE SOME ROUTES, PLEASE GET OUT, STAY IN SOME CARAVAN PARKS, MOTELS, PUBS, HAVE A PARMI, A PIZZA, BUY A COFFEE, A PIE, BUY A LOTTO TICKET AT THE LOCAL PAPER SHOP, FUEL UP, BUY SOME FRUIT FROM A ROADSIDE STALL, GET OUT AND SUPPORT THESE COMMUNITIES WITH THE ADVENTURE DOLLAR.
