For those who don't like the GPS specific and Garmin Basecamp style of managing gpx files - This is an App based on the Open Street Map mapset that will allow you to use The G.O.A.T gpx files and navigate on a smartphone for around $20 or less.
These instructions are based on Iphone use (I'm sure android is similar, I'm not sure via tablet)
IF ANYONE HAS ROADS,TRACKS,TRAILS THAT AREN'T ON THESE MAPS, SEND ME A GPX INCLUDING NOTES REGARDING THE STYLE OF ROAD/TRACK/TRAIL AND I CAN VERY EASILY ADD THEM TO THE OSM MAPSET.
Download and install the OsmAndMaps App
Open the App.
Go to the menu (bottom left 3 lines) Select Maps and Resources.
You can sign up for a subscription under OSMAnd Live tab $2.99/Month, $5.99/3 Months, $11.49/Year this will give live updates of the maps daily/weekly at your discretion. (not a requirement but I would highly recommend the live updates)
If not intersted in subscription you can download via the Australia and Oceania/ Australia choose the maps you would like (pretty sure you get 5 maps free, otherwise they are very inexpensive).
On this "The G.O.A.T" webpage select the menu top left.
Select the state of choice.
When you click on the link from the facebook page it is important you click on the 3 dots bottom right and select "Open in Browser".
On an Iphone I have had problems with it not wanting to initiate an export when using straight from the facebook link. If I click top right and choose Open in Safari it seems to work.
Click 3 lines top right.
Select the file/s, waypoints you would like.
If you want "Goatys" to show individually on your map, export them individually otherwise all the tracks will show as one big track in the OSM app and you will find it hard to distinguish which Goaty is what.
click Export.
Be patient sometimes phone takes a minute or so to think about this step.
Click Download.
Downward arrow top right will show the download progress.
You can also search for "files" (swipe down from main screen) search files, on your Iphone and you will see the "files App".
Open the file.
Ignore all the gpx poindexter gobbledy gook.
Click on the box top right upward arrow.
Choose "copy to OsmAnd Maps".
Obviously you need OsmAndMaps installed on your phone.
Turn "Show on map" slider on.
Select which pretty colour you would like the track displayed in. I try and use the translucent colour choices as it allows you to still see the roads/tracks underneath better.
Sometimes it will not let you change the colour directly after a download, if you exit back to the main map, then go back to the tracks via the method below it will let you change the colour.
It's a good idea to download each track you want individually, then you can give them different colours, Rename them and turn them on and off to save confusion on your map screen.
Hit the back arrows until you get back to the main map.
Hit the Blue Circle bottom right.
Navigate to the line and you're on The G.O.A.T.
Tapping the N button top left will allow you to change between North Up or Direction of movement depending on your preference. I use "Direction Of Movement" while navigating on the bike, and "North Up" while scrolling around zoomed out when stopped.
Happy Adventuring!
Click on 3 lines botton left (Hamburger) on main map
Turn tracks On/Off
Change their colour
3 dots top right to Delete, Rename, Add to Folders or other editing options.
Heres a few tips how I set my OsmAndMap Iphone App.
3 LINES BOTTOM RIGHT (Hamburger Icon) for all menu selections: 1: Configure Screen (I set up a Quick Action Button that is always on the main screen, I have an Auto Zoom On/Off, Map Styles Button (including Offroad, Standard OSM, and Topo choices, Add a GPX Waypoint, Show POI's On/Off (select the POI's your interested in showing and toggle them ON/Off so the maps not cluttered all the time)
Settings/Car Profile/Configure Map/Map Type : I use offroad, I find it highlights the smaller tracks better.
Settings/Car Profile/Configure Map/Point Labels: turn on slider (will show waypoint names on the map) On the Map you can click on the waypoint and click "details" it will show any information about that waypoint.
Settings/Car Profile/Configure Map : Map Type (Offroad), Map Magnifier (75%), Text Size (150%), Contour Lines - Neeed to download for your area (start at zoom 14, Colour - Dark Brown, Line width/Density- Medium), Terrain - Need to download for your area (Enable Hillshade - Transparency - 50%, zoom level min -3, Max - 16)
Settings/Car profile/Navigation Settings/Map Behaviour : Set Auto Zoom to Long Range. sometimes this can not zoom out far enough, if so turn it off. about 200m zoom is a good start generally.
I run the Map orientation to direction of movement when navigating (you can switch between this and north up easily by tapping on the N button (compass) top right on the main map screen) - Select Configure Screen/Left Panel/Compass to make it show on the map always.
Settings: Scroll to bottom "Export" export all your settings so you can easily reinstate them if u do an update etc.
Thats my tips, like I say I've been testing this App for a while as I'm a big fan of the Open Street Map concept and a contributer to the mapset. I find it pretty easy to use. Like all GPS they use A LOT of battery so you must have a charging setup while running the App. Myself I prefer to use a dedicated GPS unit. I also wish people could get their heads around Garmin Basecamp as its such a powerful tool to manage GPX files and maps. However I know a lot of people use smartphones and this setup will get you out G.O.A.T ing around for under $20
Hope to see you out G.O.A.T ing around somewhere someday!
