#8. The Relay Race - (BFDI 8)

When I started to plan out these articles. I began with a list of about 100 possible ideas, and after it was cut down to 55, I looked at the top 10, and noticed that most of these moments would be widely considered to be the greatest moments in BFDI.

But I also noticed that just a few, were very under the radar moments of the show. Not quite as memorable but were incredibly underrated in terms of comedic value. These scenes will be called Golden Moments, because they're moments that have made my top 10, that really deserve a lot more recognition then they actually receive.

There will be three Golden Moments throughout the rest of this ending countdown.

As a disclaimer, Dora will not be a Golden Moment

So the first of these Golden Moments is what you read in the title.

The Relay Race is one of the greatest challenges BFDI has ever had, and it's a real shame that no one ever mentions this scene, ever. It's constantly overshadowed my bigger screen-capturing moments that happened throughout the show. The actual challenge is kind of a forgotten gem of the classic era episodes.

So the first of the Golden moments is really coming from a golden episode. It's really too bad most people don't know about or remember this scene in the grand scope of all of BFDI. It made this countdown for a reason.

So without further ado: The first of the three Golden moments.

This article is also functioning as a recap of some of the older articles I have written, as we enter the last few articles, this will be a good way to catch up.

To start, here's a quick reminder of what preceded the challenge

*Whine*

There are an insane amount of callbacks to running jokes throughout this article. Be prepared.

So now the challenge begins.

It's a race between Firey, Ice Cube, Leafy, Golf Ball, and Rocky.

Would not trust to take care of a baby

Would not trust to take care of a paperclip

"I'm too cool for a paperclip anyway"

"The baby is vomiting? Why is the baby ejecting things from itself! What did you do to it!?"

"It won't stop crying! Someone prick it with a pencil!"

"Does this paperclip make me look fat?"

Okay okay, I'll get back to the challenge.

Just to add another wrench into the contest. The Announcer adds a fun twist.

"There is one twist"

"When you are running"

"You must carry the person who will run the race after you"

This twist definitely makes the challenge a lot more interesting.

Because you get lots of opportunities for good dialogues to evolve from random pairings.

Of course, some contestants celebrate, and others complain.

"Yeah! I don't have to carry anyone!"

"I only have to carry Bubble"

"I have to carry Match, and I know she's gaining weight"

"I'm gonna put Golf Ball on my back, all 900 pounds of her"

"If I murder Rocky, do we win by default?"

"Ice Cube is gonna kill me!"

No comment

And this is only the beginning, there are so many amazing character moments in this scene alone.

Because now the race actually begins.

Right away, Pen gives some helpful advice.

"Faster, Eraser! Faster!"

"No shit, Sherlock"

Very helpful, I'm sure Eraser didn't know that you have to be fast to win a race.

I'm sure he has enough of a brain to know that.

"Erasers don't have brains"

On second thought, possibly not.

Regardless, Pen actually doesn't just give one piece of advice. He actually gives much more advice throughout the rest of the race.

"An alliance of more than or equal to four will almost surely divide into opposite sides"

"Did you know bees can smell fear?"

"The province of Saskatchewan is larger than the entire nation of Sweden"

"A chicken can live for 8 hours without it's head"

If you thought Pen shouting pointless information was bad, just wait until you see what the Squashy Grapes are up to.

"Why are you crying, Ice Cube? Are you melting?"

"No shit, Sherlock"

Oh and when Pen returns to Pencil. What does he have to say to her?

You guessed it! More useless advice!

"Get on, Pencil"

"No shit, Sherlock"

Alien: Pen knows what he's up to.

Oh and things keep getting worse for the Squashy Grapes.

"She's pretty much... dead"

Yes, Firey murdered a teammate.

Golf Ball hears this and gives and celebrates internally

And then Golf Ball has to reply to the situation in her very matter-of-fact manner.

"The Ice Cube Recovery Center™ won't start until Ice Cube is completely melted"

"So... what are you waiting for?"

"FINISH THE JOB"

"Please don't hurt me"

And then the challenge continues to go down a certain path.

As the Cherries continue their lead further.

"Here comes the tree!"

This is the only interaction they ever have. Shippers, BACK OFF

Also this is one of the only examples of Pencil's rarely seen sing-songy voice.

But back to the challenge.

"Icy, because you have no arms..."

"I'll have to sit on you"

"Is this okay?"

"If I had a spine, I would kick you right now..."

"... But I don't, so feel free to drive me like a car"

"Go go go!"

Okay, so that's all fine. But what about the other team?

Well... Pen said something relevant for a change.

"We're here!"

Here is where we get to our quintessential Ice Cube moment.

The first real callback to a past moment.

Basically Ice Cube is a failure, and this is another contribution to her massive list of failures too.

So the events, as it happens.

Ice Cube runs toward the tree

She makes a turn

And accidentally tosses Leafy off her

*Whine*

Another classic Ice Cube fail.

What more can you expect from a parasite who suddenly has to become the host?

Leaves the nightlight on

Then probably comes to my favourite scene in the entire show.

The timing and abrupt stop to the music in this moment really sells the awkwardness of the whole exchange.

And it involves two great characters.

The cursed sisters

So as I mentioned, after Ice Cube's catastrophic fail.

The music suddenly goes silent.

The camera pans to Match and Pencil.

Match opens her mouth and says...

"Pencil..."

"... I'm not fat, am I?"

Pay attention to some of these facial expressions.

They're awesome.

Alien: Pencil is feeling guilty of calling her best friend overweight.

"uhhh"

*Grimace*

"I was just JK, kidding, Match"

"Oh, okay then"

*Grimace again*

Okay back to the scene. I just love that little dialogue.

And the completely fake and passive aggressive answer Pencil gives back.

I'm sure passive aggressive comments were said throughout the rest of the race too.

"It's so great you just wear anything"

"You use sarcasm like a lot"

"You always get to pick where we eat"

"You're so smart for someone of your IQ"

But back to the challenge. This is the moment where the Cherries winning seems inevitable.

Leafy: Hey! They lapped us!"

Things are looking bad for the Grapes, as the cherries for the first time have a lead.

But then we are about to introduce the ticking time bomb of the Squishy Cherries.

A bubble

But this is also the fault of Match. Because as the scene goes...

"Release!"

We actually don't get to see that right away.

Back to the grapes.

"Hey Golf Ball"

"Wow, you're... heavy"

"No shit, Sherlock"

Okay NOW back to Match and Bubble.

"Match, not so hard!"

"You'll pop me!"

*pop*

"Oh poopy"

"Uh oh"

"Where's the BRC?"

And in this case...

... it's really far away

*SLAM*

"I'm coming!"

So thanks to the Cherries's poor planning, they are facing a pretty major setback now.

But the Squashy Grapes are catching up ever so slowly.

"Gosh, you're heavy"

"Stop calling me fat!"

"Oh you're too weak huh? Let the one and only Pencil do it!"

Still moving

Still waiting

"ouagghhhh"

So they have already caught up quite a bit.

And I always loved this little detail.

Rocky jumps on Golf Ball

And she's already running before he lands on her

It's little character details like this that always make the show a little more interesting.

Because Golf Ball is the exact type of person to start running before someone is seated.

Still waiting

Then Rocky gets motion sickness.

"Bulleh"

And it obstructs Golf Ball's vision

And she runs headfirst into a tree

She even manages to uproot it

Shit eating grin

Alien: Goddamn Golf Ball is really damn strong. Just imagine what she could do if she actually had arms.

And so finally the race gets interesting again.

"Remember, not too hard!"

And back to the race. Currently the grapes have a lead for the first time.

But it's about to be destroyed.

Because Rocky doesn't know how to move

Everyone shouts at him to get moving

But things get worse for the Grapes very quickly.

Bubble catches up

Golf Ball starts to nudge Rocky

After a while, Golf Ball just decides to stop caring.

"Oh, screw it"

This kick does two things.

First, it pops Bubble. And it also gets Rocky stuck in a tree

Funnily enough, he does fall out of it

And starts walking back very very slowly

Worst golden retriever ever

Bubble runs to catch up

But of course. Golf Ball channels her inner cheater, and decides it's time to become a professional Football player.

Something awakens from within Golf Ball

As she delivers the death blow

Does not endorse the big brother program

Where Leafy is conveniently there to catch him

And somewhere, somehow. The Grapes win the challenge out of nowhere.

This also marks their sixth challenge win in a row which is wickedly amazing to think about.

Funnily enough, the team members who sat out aren't being the most supportive.

"We won?"

"That's a relief"

"Yeah! I wasn't expecting us to win"

"But I'm glad we did!"

So that would be a wrap on what I would easily call the funniest challenge in BFDI history, just so many great moment sprinkled throughout the little one on one character interactions that we got to see during that one scene. And each and every one of them of them were absolutely hilarious, awesome and most of all amazing.

So that's why it is my first Golden moment, more to come soon.
