Exercising flexibility is vital in the implementation and provision of different treatments and recommendations that are empirically supported. However, while Dr. Fulton is completely open to consider and understand cases from other theoretical lenses, if the evidence supports, she currently recognizes contextual behaviorism as her ‘home base’ or theoretical orientation. Particular areas of focus that she depends on for conceptualization include impairment, a timeline of onset and/or episodes of symptomology, patterns of thoughts, behaviors, and feelings, as well as their functions, and reinforcing variables, in addition to the interaction between these different elements. She tends to conceptualize symptoms in terms of experiential avoidance and escape behavior. Developing a solid foundation for conceptualization allows her to prioritize symptoms and behavioral patterns for intervention. In summary, she emphasizes a data-driven approach both to understand a case and to track progression of treatment through sessions. Dr. Fulton also stresses the importance of a collaborative effort between herself and her client.
