When used correctly, technology can support language growth, engage students in authentic use of technology and help students acquire essential content knowledge and digital literacy skills. In order to achieve this, we must close the ELL Technology Gap.
The #ELLEdTech Project Aims to help close that technology gap by meeting three goals:
ELL Students are less likely to have technology at home than other segments of the population, and therefore they need to have access to it at school in order to begin developing critical digital skills. Teachers cannot provide these opportunities to students if the technology is not available at their school.
Equally important to providing devices is providing quality training and professional development to our ESOL teachers on the effective use of technology during instruction. All the tech in the world won't make an impact if the teacher isn't trained on best practices for integrating that technology into instruction.
Additionally, the #ELLEdTech Project hopes to help teachers engage their ELL parents & families in and through technology where possible. Parents are important partners, especially when it comes to teaching topics like digital citizenship and safety for students. Technology also makes it easier than ever to break down language barriers and connect with parents in a variety of ways.
