If you have never heard of or seen The Owl House before, you’re missing out. The Owl House is an animated TV series that follows Luz Nocella, a socially awkward 16-year-old who struggles to find herself in life. She is sent to a summer “reality check” camp to correct her weird antics at school. One day, she stumbles upon an abandoned house that eventually leads to a fictitious world called the Demon world, or more precisely, the Boiling Isles, and her life will never be the same.
The rest of this review includes spoilers for some of the characters.
Luz first meets Eda Clawthorne, or the Owl Lady, who transforms into an owl-like beast she cannot control. She then meets King, a fox-like creature who later finds he has demonic powers. She is then enrolled at Hexside, a school that specializes in teaching magic. Luz was not accepted at first due to being a human, but was accepted later on. She then meets three students: Willow, a witch who conjures nature magic, Gus, a wizard who conjures clones and deceptions, and Amity, a witch who conjures slime-like abominations and (spoiler alert!) is Luz’s lover.
Season 1 of The Owl House also showcased antagonist Lilith Clawthorne. Lilith is the sister of Eda Clawthorne, who was hell-bent on capturing her own sister until later finding out that Eda would be turned to stone as part of Emperor Belos’s plan to eradicate wild, uncontrolled witches and wizards. In the end of the first season, Lilith shared Eda’s curse, which allowed her to control her curse and eventually Lilith too.
In the second season, we follow Luz in her journey to learn magic, in which the audience learns that Luz is a lesbian, in love with Amity, learning that Belos has been planning for over 400 years to eradicate the Boiling Isles altogether and that Belos has been growing artificial clones he calls Hunter, named after his deceased brother who died while venturing in the Boiling Isles and died a mysterious death. Belos wanted vengeance against the entirety of the Island’s inhabitants for failing to protect his younger brother. In an attempt to stop Belos’ destruction of the Boiling Isles, King finds a disc that frees The Collector, a young kid capable of powerful magic, who yearns to have a friend he could play with.
When an audience is introduced to characters for the first time, they tend to assume that the character’s first impression will stay with them for the entire season. In The Owl House, this is not the case. While Luz is the main character of the show, the character that changes the most is Amity, as she goes from being cold-hearted and negative about Luz to going into a relationship with her.
What makes this series entertaining is a combination of well-executed episodes, super secret easter eggs, beautiful animations, and the story. However, the biggest eye-catching moment from The Owl House is when the show introduces ideas about LGBTQ, which was why the show got canceled by Disney in the first place. According to sources such as Vanity Fair and Polygon, the Disney executives said the show did not “fit the Disney brand.” However, in my opinion, a lot of the audiences watching the show would disagree with this decision because this show was probably the most outward show ever to be put on television. The reason was that LGBTQ rights were in the spotlight, and with some American states pushing for stricter laws on discussing LGBTQ topics, some people, especially kids, lack the ideas to identify their gender and sexuality.
Looking back on the episodes, there are a lot of things to talk about that make it the best TV show that I have seen in my life. One is the characters. The voice actors and animators helped bring this TV show to life by allowing characters to be themselves. It is expressed through their eyes and tone of voice, as well as what the entire TV show represents in the real world.
With The Owl House officially ending on April 8, 2023 after releasing the final episode, "Watching and Dreaming", it is safe to say that the show has made a mark on the television industry. The Owl House has made headlines, immediately having die-hard fans of the show since the very first episode, and has captured the hearts of many adults and kids alike.
