The Dendrite is a student-led journal club and podcast at the University of Ottawa. We’re here to make research more approachable and accessible for undergraduate students. Whether you're in your first year or looking for an honours thesis supervisor, this platform will help you take the next step with confidence.
Getting involved in research can feel overwhelming. You might be wondering how to find a lab, who to email, or what counts as research experience. That’s exactly why this page exists. We want to guide you through the process and connect you with tools and opportunities that actually make sense for students like you.
Our goal is to support you through clear resources, practical advice, and real stories from uOttawa’s research community. Research is not just for graduate students or people in lab coats. It is for curious, motivated undergrads too.
You do not need to have a research question in mind or know your future field. Just start with what you're curious about. Are you interested in neuroscience? Global health? Molecular biology? Even having a general theme can help you narrow your focus.
Once you know the topics you're drawn to, start exploring professors and research labs that work in those areas. uOttawa has labs across many departments and affiliated hospitals like CHEO, OHRI, and the Heart Institute.
We’ve made this easier by compiling a full page of lab directories and supervisor listings:
→ Explore Research Labs and Supervisors
* Many of these profiles mention graduate students, but professors often welcome undergrads who are genuinely interested and willing to learn.
If you are not sure what a lab actually does or want to hear the human side of research, check out our podcast. The Dendrite Podcast features professors from across uOttawa discussing their research journeys, current projects, and advice for students.

It is a great way to explore different fields and get inspired before reaching out.
Once you find a lab or supervisor you’re interested in, the next step is contacting them. You do not need to overthink it. A short, professional email that shows your interest and background is more than enough.
We’ve created a full page to help you with this. It includes cold email templates, resume tips, and follow-up examples:
→ Check Out Our Email Templates and Tips
This page will walk you through the process so you do not have to figure it out on your own.
Not every professor will respond, and not every opportunity will work out. That is completely normal. It may take a few messages to find the right fit. Be respectful, follow up once if needed, and keep trying.
Getting into research is not just about landing one role. It is about discovering what you enjoy, building confidence, and opening new doors in your academic journey.
