After their introduction to art and lessons on fundamentals, students demonstrated their ability to combine concepts learned about the elements of art and principles of design! This was their first ever project, using only rulers, paper and lots of sharpies. This was also a great study for contrast, variety, and the element of shape.
Neurographic art is a meditative artmaking process created by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev. This kid of art uses intuitive, free-flowing lines and abstract shapes that are said to help connect the conscious and unconscious mind. It even helps to relieve stress and promote mindfulness! Students continued to display their understanding of the elements and principles of art and design with this assignment. They also got to use watercolor pain for the first time, how relaxing!
In lieu of a popular art trend going around the internet where friends and loved ones gather together to make portraits of one another solely out of paper, we decided to jump in and give it our best shot! Before we started, we took some time to learn the basics of face shape and structure. Then, shortly after, we got right to work constructing these awesome portraits!
Black History Month 2026
In honor of Black History Month, we looked into the work of North Carolina native artist, Minnie Evans!
Minnie Evans was a self-taught artist known for her bold, colorful drawings filled with patterns, symbols, plants, faces, and dream-like imagery. She believed her artwork was inspired by visions and dreams, and she used repeating shapes, symmetry, and bright colors to create detailed, imaginative worlds. Her work often feels both structured and magical, blending nature, spirituality, and personal symbolism.
In this project, students explored Minnie Evans’ artistic style and break it down into recognizable elements (such as swirls, scalloped shapes, flowers, leaves, stars, eyes, and vines). Then, instead of copying her work, students inserted themselves into a “dream world” inspired by Evans' style. Students chose specific symbols and patterns that represented or resonated with them, their interests, or their inner world, and combine them into a symmetrical composition.
Jen Stark is a well known artist who is known for creating sculptural objects, wall murals, animated films, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and interactive projections using her on of a king drip pattern/design.
Her work has been shown all over the world with major art shows (New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Thailand, and Canada).
For this project, we made a collaborative drip pattern/mural to incorporate in our 2026 Art Show!
Sticky-Note Doodles of the Day are fun warm ups we do to start off a class and get a little practice drawing in before we get to the main activity. On this particular day, students were challenged witrh drawing their favorite Instagram/TikTok mem reactiosn and the results were just plain hilarious!
