After a thorough search of the area, the police recovered a suicide note, the pen Dr. Prunus used to write it, a book of matches, an old coin, an empty potato chip bag and a package of hot dogs and buns. BELLRINGER: The Tortilla Maker Diego Rivera 1925
The painter Diego Rivera (1886-1957) is perhaps the most well-known Mexican artist in the United States. Rivera studied art in Paris at a time when many modern styles were being introduced;he was interested in these trends but did not adopt any of them. The exploration of his native Mexico influenced the development of a style based on Aztec and Mayan sculptures. Diego Rivera created an art form for the people. In works like The Tortilla Maker, he chose common men and women as his subjects and elevated their humble activities with the beauty of his monumental s The Tortilla Maker uses light and dark instead of color to focus our attention on the main figure. The two figures fill the picture, a technique that recalls Mayan temple carvings. The subdued color of the work enhances its sculptural qualities. In this work, Rivera depicts an intimate moment between a mother and daughter.
Question 1:Appreciation. In this painting, the artist has used form, line, and color to evoke the simple strength and dignity of people doing useful and meaningful work. Focus on the solid, substantial forms in the central figure. What seems to be the woman's attitude toward the work she is doing? Does she find it difficult and tedious or satisfying and natural? Do the gently curving lines throughout the work suggest struggle or harmony? Finally, look at the warm earth tones the artist has chosen. With what do you associate these colors? Then explain how Diego Rivera has used visual elements to communicate specific feelings and ideas. Question 2 Process Analysis. In the painting, the figure at the left may be the daughter of the tortilla maker. She is using a mortar and pestle to grind corn into flour that will be used in making tortillas. One has the impression that she is learning the process from her mother, who learned it from hers. Write step-by-step instructions for a project that requires the use of a skill you have learned from one of your parents. Make your instructions clear, complete, sequential, and easy to follow.

“I once asked a very successful woman to share her secret with me. She smiled and said to me…
“I started succeeding when I started leaving small fights for small fighters.
I stopped fighting those who gossiped about me…
I stopped fighting with my in laws…
I stopped fighting for attention…
I stopped fighting to meet peoples expectation of me…
I stopped fighting for my rights with inconsiderate people..
I stopped fighting to please everyone…
I stopped fighting to prove they were wrong about me….
I left such fights for those who have nothing else to fight…
And I started fighting for my vision, my dreams, my ideas and my destiny.
The day I gave up on small fights is the day I started becoming successful & so much more content.”
Some fights are not worth your time….. Choose what you fight for wisely.”
