The 12 signs of the zodiac are; Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
Along with the 12 zodiac signs of the horoscope, there are also 12 houses that describe different aspects of life based on the placements of the zodiac signs (as shown in carousel images below). Additionally each zodiac sign in order also rules specific body parts that correspond (as shown in carousel image below).
There are four elements of the zodiac: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
Aries, Leo Sagittarius, are Fire signs.
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, are Earth signs.
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius are Air signs.
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, are Water signs.
Zodiac signs are commonly referred to just by Sun sign placement. For example, when in casual conversation most people only know or talk about the one Sun sign placement. Sometimes other placements are just as well known as the Sun sign, such as the Moon Sign, and rising sign/ascendant.
Each zodiac placement calculates where each planet etc. was placed on the birthday. For example, the Sun sign is where the Sun was when you were born, and calculated from the month and birthday. The Moon sign is where the Moon was when you were born, an calculated by birth year. The rising sign is when, and where the sun was rising when you were born, calculated by the birth time and location.
A analogy I learned and used to explain what's commonly referred to as "the big three", Sun, Moon, and, rising, signs is a "car" and "people in a car". To elaborate, the Sun sign in comparison is "the driver", and the one making the moves/actions. The Moon sign in comparison is "the passenger" usually helping navigate, and think things through in conversation. The rising sign in comparison is "the car" the impression you give off to others, how you come off to others, and appearance/style.

Some readers like to mention corresponding zodiac signs to the tarot cards, a majority related to the major arcana and court cards of the suits additionally relating the four elements of the zodiac with the four suits of tarot and cards.
Fire signs being brought up as the suit of wands, Water signs as the suit of cups, Air signs as the suit of swords, and Earth signs as pentacles.
