In the 1980s, an early inspiration for this building was the story told in a TV news item about an old man called Justo Gallego Martínez who was continuing - after many years - to build a massive ‘cathedral’ by himself (and mostly from discarded and recycled materials) in Mejorada del Campo on the outskirts of Madrid.
