On Monday, February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck northwest Syria near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, killing over 1,300 people and injuring thousands more. The earthquake happened early in the morning and was quickly followed by another 7.7 magnitude earthquake a few hours later, complicating rescue efforts. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers and residents search for survivors beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings. The earthquake destroyed many homes and buildings, leaving residents stunned and standing in the snow in their pyjamas as rescuers dug through the debris. Tremors were felt in places such as Lebanon, Greece, and Cyprus. Turkey's president reported 912 deaths, 5,383 injuries, and 2,818 collapsed buildings, while Syria's health ministry reported 326 deaths and 1,042 injuries. The head of the Turkish Red Crescent is mobilising resources for the region and urging people to evacuate damaged homes, while the head of Turkey's disaster management agency has warned civilians to limit communication to urgent texts only to assist emergency services in finding survivors. Gaziantep's historic castle was said to have collapsed. The Catalytixs wish complete recovery for the affected ones. Get well soon, Turkiye and Syria!
