Biography of Edgar

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19th of 1809. His father abandoned his family when he was just one year old and his mother died of consumption one year later, so he was raised by a family from Richmond, Virginia. Although this situation, they never formally adopted him. He went to school between 1815 and 1820 and then in 1826 he went to the University of Virginia. His first success as a writer came in 1833 when he won a prize in a short story contest for his "Ms. Found In A Bottle". Tree years later he got married.

He is considered one of the America's grates writers. He is said to have invented the modern detective story and his works are full of suspense as his most famous poem, "The Raven".

In 1849 Poe was travelling from Richmond to New York, but he only made it as far as Baltimore. There he died mysteriously on October 7th. There are many theories about the cause of his death, but the answer is still unclear.
