Montresor chained Fortunato in a small room underground. The days passed and Fortunato was in a serious condition being chained, the only thing he ate is a piece of bread that Montresor gave him ones a day. One day, when Montresor left after feeding Fortunato, Fortunato was able to free himself, because he was very thin from eating almost nothing. Once Fortunato was unleashed, he seized the opportunity and locked Montresor in the same room, leaving him abandoned forever.
