Have a working state machine early on in the project that you can branch off of for testing other services

Double check your soldering! Especially if you are cascading matrix displays

Make sure to get the core functionality of your project working before implementing other ideas

Design the housing for the electronics in a way that allows easy accessibility and/or disassembly
