A DOLL'S HOUSE
by Henrik Ibsen Adapted by Amy Herzog
Ibsen’s celebrated play thrust drama firmly into the modern age when it premiered in 1879. Now, nearly 150 years later, acclaimed playwright Amy Herzog makes freshly relevant a story that shocked audiences and brought forth a new era of theatre. This engaging one-act adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic breathes new life into the captivating tale of Nora Helmer, a spirited young woman completely devoted to her husband, Torvald. Yet, beneath the surface, not everything is as it seems: when Nora makes a bold move to safeguard her husband, she inadvertently places them both in danger, challenging the foundations of their marriage. This revelation compels them to reflect on their relationship and confront the question of how deeply they truly understand one another.
Director Kevin Long: Why stage this play now? More than ever in today’s political climate, women’s rights are under increasing scrutiny and attack. This play reminds us that women are not defined solely by their roles as wives or mothers, but first and foremost as human beings deserving of autonomy, dignity, and equality. It is both striking and sobering that nearly 150 years after the play was written, these conversations remain urgently relevant today.
