For those who missed Sister Majella’s session today (12-06-2021)
Mt . 9: 14-17 was the passage taken for an in-depth analysis.
Credit goes to Sister Maria Santhanam for being instrumental in raising this concern on the practice of old rituals and practices.
Sister Majella, unraveled the mystery behind - “Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
Let me tell you, I wouldn’t have in my wildest dream thought, that it required first an understanding of who are Pharisees and Sadducees?
Pharisees – Far to see !! (The present Jews) She became our History Teacher, here as Mervin Brother put it across to me later.
Sadducees – Sad to see !! (They have vanished from Earth altogether)
The understanding that we might, in turn, be those Pharisees of Jesus’s times – Let’s give it a thought, The Anointed.
Good things often come in small packages is what we would have often heard of, but here is our Angel of God, who came to this world as a 5 Kg. baby! I loved the way she narrated her story, she often heard from another Angel in her life. Of course, keeping very much to the relevance of the topic under discussion as always, but imploring all possible means to come down to the level of The Anointed, to help us understand things. Here she wanted to put across, how St. John the Baptist as a child would have been frequently told the story by his mother Elizabeth, of who he is to be to Jesus, his cousin as he grew up. Well co-related Sister.
Coming to the crux of it, how Jesus did not retort back to the questioners, boasting (which we would have done, without a second thought) of the several occasions that He had fasted, and had ensured that His disciples as well to follow it, but the relevance why it wasn’t the need of the hour at that point of time. In other words, the relevance of fast and who the much-awaited bridegroom was? and the non-feasibility of sewing a patch of unshrunk cloth on the old garment and pouring new wine into old wineskins?
Key takeaways –
Old and New Covenant.
Old should be done away with. Old became redundant with Jesus’s birth.
Accept the new Covenant and that is Jesus Himself (Immanuel – God is with us, Then why follow the old?)
