Selecting the necessary tip for Oxy-Acetylene cutting and welding can be difficult. The charts below provide general information for selecting tips. There are some variances in the Tip Size among manufacturers, but the basic numerical progression is nominal. The American Welding Society is working on standardizing the labeling system, but without mandatory legislation many manufacturers are still producing tips with their own proprietary labeling system. (Uccellini, 2003)
Selecting the proper cutting tip and pressure settings will ensure the highest quality cut. An accurate measurement of the metal's thickness is all that is needed to determine the proper size of cutting tip and gas pressure settings.
The application can also be a factor:
Tips are designed specifically for the applications in which they are to be used. There are different tips used for cutting, gouging, and heating. They may be one piece of solid copper, or a two-piece hybrid with a brass inner piece and a copper outer piece. Some cutting tips are specially designed to use with automated cutting machinery for high-pressure cutting that permits quicker, cleaner, more accurate cuts. (American Torch Tip, 2016)
Selecting the proper welding tip and pressure settings will ensure the highest quality weld. An accurate measurement of the metal's thickness is all that is needed to determine the proper size of welding tip and gas pressure settings.
Manufacturers proprietary labeling may create some confusion in Tip selection, but if the welder considers that the progression of orifice opening in relationship to metal thickness will be very similar among the different welding tip producers an educated deduction can be achieved.
The welder must check the amount of fuel gas required to run the tip and be sure to provide sufficient gas to run the tip without backfires and overheating. (Uccellini, 2003)
