In my classroom I implement UFLI foundations using the official daily powerpoints provided for each lesson. Each week allows for the students to master two phonics skills and demonstrate growth and understanding of the skills through ongoing progress monitoring.
Day 1: I pull up the UFLI PowerPoint for the skill I am teaching (for example -CH) and I teach steps 1-5 of the UFLI routine. The steps are 1. Phonemic Awareness 2. Visual Drill 3. Auditory Drill 4. Blending Drill and 5. Introducing the New Concept. This allows for my students to model the new sound, guide them through blending activities and give them opportunities to practice.
Day 2: I pull up the UFLI powerpoint from the day before and look for Day 2. I review the new skill that we learned yesterday and then move into steps 6-8. Step 6. is word work Step 7. is Irregular words and Step 8. is connected text. Students get the ability to build and read words with the new pattern that we have learned, and then apply their learning by reading a connected text passage that reinforces the skill taught.
After completing Day 2 we begin the cycle again on Day 1 with a new phonics skill. This allows for my students to continually be exposed to new phonics skills while reinforcing the structure of the UFLI routine.
At the end of the week Friday is reserved for review and progress monitoring. This gives me time to check student mastery, identify who may need reteaching of the skills and celebrate student growth!
With the use of the UFLI powerpoints I am able to keep the structure consistent, organized, and engaging for my students. The predictable routine allows for the students to feel confident and successful, while the explicit, systematic instruction ensures that each of the children in my classroom are developing strong decoding and blending skills that can directly transfer to their reading and writing skills.
