My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is grounded in a humanistic approach to education, where empathy, individuality, and self-discovery guide the creative process. I strive to build a classroom that feels like home: a space where students feel safe, valued, and inspired to take creative risks. I believe a welcoming environment is the foundation of creativity and growth. When students feel comfortable enough to experiment, fail, and try again, they begin to uncover who they are as artists and individuals.
Art is deeply personal, and I believe students learn best when they can explore their individuality through media and methods that speak to them. Whether we’re painting murals, experimenting with mixed media, or sketching from observation, my goal is to create an environment where artistic growth feels both structured and freeing.
I will introduce students to diverse artists such as Julie Mehretu’s dynamic use of line, Kara Walker’s narrative silhouettes, and Clyfford Still’s abstract explosions of color to show that there is no single way to make or define art. I will encourage discussion about how art connects to identity, storytelling, and history, allowing students to see their own cultures and experiences reflected in the creative process. By engaging with a variety of artists and movements, students learn to value multiple perspectives and appreciate the endless possibilities within visual expression.
My classroom will emphasize choice-based learning, student voice, and collaborative community. Critiques, reflective discussions, and one-on-one check-ins allow me to meet students where they are, guiding them toward meaningful improvement. I view each student as a developing artist, capable of expression that connects personal experience with broader cultural context.
Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate a space where students not only develop technical skill but also confidence, empathy, and curiosity. Art is a language of connection and belonging, if only you learn its tongue. In my room, everyone has a place, and every mark made has meaning. I believe everyone can be an artist; it’s just a question of whether they want to be.
