Using Embroidery Iron-on Transfers

Fabric

Start by choosing the right fabric. A light colored, tightly woven, smooth finish fabric will work the best. A needle should be able to pass through the weave of the fabric easily. The needle shouldn't be punching holes in the fabric. Textured fabrics will confuse the design & just won't look nice. If using a dark fabric, you can transfer the design onto another paper using a light colored dressmaker's carbon, or transfer pencil or pen. Carefully trace over the design using short, heavy strokes.

Prepare To Iron

Make sure that your iron & ironing board cover are clean. Place a piece of sheeting or scrap fabric over the board cover to prevent the transfer from bleeding through to your cover. If you are going to reuse the transfer many times, you may want to put a piece of aluminum foil on the ironing board cover under your design fabric. This will give a darker impression and extend the life of the design. Thoroughly press the design fabric. If your design fabric is prone to fraying, machine zig zag the edge or bind with masking tape.

Transfer the Design

When all is ready, place the ink side of the design down against the fabric. Press on med/high heat without steam. Move the iron up & down. No pulling or distorting the fabric. Don't burn the transfer paper...! Let the design paper cool for a few seconds. Carefully lift the design paper off.
