Locking up your heart seems like an awful thing to do
But isn't it true that while it may not beat
It wont ever break
I locked my heart away for a good while
And it was the safest it felt for a long time
But it seems as hard as I tried to forget the code
The box I trapped my heart in wasn’t soundproof and it called out the password to whoever would set it free
I think I've trained my heart well enough
It would only act out like that once it was fully healed
And had spent enough time in the box
It turns out my heart in fact was not shouting out the code
But was waiting on someone who already knew it
They had it the whole time
Instead of locking their own heart up for safe keeping
They slipped the code into their box
Waiting for the day they could finally use it
I think my heart let this one in
Because it saw something
It had never before
It was gentle hands that wouldn't rip the lock off
But rather unwrap it like a gift
Punching in the digits of the code
One by one and letting me remove the lock
As i chose to
I think keeping your heart snug in a box
Isnt hiding a light under a bushel
But rather keeping it safe
Until the day comes where it knows to come out
And if it gets confused
And comes out to the wrong hands
And gets hurt
Have patience with a young heart who cant see properly yet
All this means is that perhaps instead of a combination
It'll find a lock and key to hide behind
As long as there's only one key
Eventually you heart will find the hands behind it
And not just the picklock scavengers
My heart may very well retreat back
To the safety of the box
If these new hands drop it too many times
But I've grown to trust my heart
If it spends enough time alone in the box
It'll find the hope
To keep looking for the hands safe enough to replace
The box.
