Women should earn the same amount of money as men for the same job, right? Sadly, it’s not like that.
The gender pay gap is the difference between the average gross hourly earnings of men and women. Every single country has this pay gap, the lowest being Belgium, with a 1.17% difference in pay between men and women, meaning that there is no country that has truly eliminated the difference. Germany has an 18% gap.
The reason for the gender pay gap is sexism: women have a significantly lower chance to be promoted and get leading positions. However, it is not just that, women are also believed by many to be less able to do work or to be lazy, which can directly lead to less pay compared to men in the same company. Even though that is illegal in Germany, many women do not speak out because they fear unemployment or further discrimination.
While this may be discouraging, there is hope: the gender pay gap has been slowly but continuously decreasing. While it was at 24% in 2014, it has decreased by 6% and the Federal Government is planning to decrease it to 10% by 2030.
