Excitement filled the air as the fifth and sixth-grade students took their places on stage at the highly anticipated Winter Concert. This year’s event was nothing short of breathtaking and showcased the dedication and talent of these young musicians and their teachers. This concert, which had been many months in the works, brought together a diverse variety of songs ranging from film music to folk songs and everything in between.
What truly never fails to amaze me at these concerts is the fact that both the choir and bands learn to sing and play completely from scratch, most students having had no prior experience with music. Led by the music teachers Ms. Kwai, Ms. Schiebold, and Mr. Gutowski, the students put in countless hours of practice to deliver a truly exceptional performance.
The fifth-grade bands, who had only just begun learning their instruments four months ago, showcased their hard work and motivation through several short pieces in which they explored musical themes such as the contrast between loud and quiet or how the song feels when it is being played by different instruments.
The sixth-grade bands then blew the audience away and proved once again that hard work pays off as they played three pieces that looked into more complex musical themes. One of these pieces which everyone especially enjoyed was the main theme from “Star Wars” which is incredibly impressive due to its complex rhythms and harmonies.
In addition to the fifth and sixth-grade bands performing a variety of songs, the choir also graced the stage, enchanting everyone with their wonderful harmonies. Notably, one of the most incredible moments of the evening came when the choir took the audience on a heartfelt journey by singing the song most commonly known as “Carol of the Bells” as it was originally written in Ukrainian. They took special care to highlight the original meaning of the song and worked hard in cooperation with Ukrainian transfer students to make sure their pronunciation was as accurate as possible. Especially in light of recent events, this gesture truly touched everyone in the gymnasium and it was heartwarming to see our school’s ideals be showcased in such a manner of fully embracing another language and culture.
All in all, the dedication of the students and teachers in our Primary school produced a truly memorable concert filled to the brim with passion and a love of music. Congratulations to all the participants on a truly remarkable performance!
