The Kings and Queens magically marry.
1. Remove the Kings and Queens, then discard the rest of the deck. Lay the Kings in a face-up row on the table with the colours separated. Let's say they are in order, from left to right: C-S-H-D. Now lay one Queen on top of each King, but the order of the Queens is the opposite of the Kings. In this case, the pairing would be as follows: KC-KS-KH-KD and QD-QH-QS-QC.
2. Point out that no couple is happily married (none match), then gather them together, placing one pair on top of the next—left to right or right to left.
3. Say, "Each couple are so unhappy that they are feeling as low as they have ever felt. In fact, this couple fell so low that they are on the very bottom of the packet."
Turn the packet face up and spread the face pair to show a mismatched King and queen, then turn the packet face down again.
You now appear to reverse the order of the cards to bring the Queen and King to the top. However, you carry out a simple Biddle Count that will marry the Queen with her King when she arrives on top. Hold the packet in a right-hand Biddle grip.
You will now count eight cards as follows:
Count the first fairly, "one," then Biddle it back under the packet as you count the second, "two." Continue counting the remaining cards fairly, "...three, four, five, six, seven, eight," the final two going on top as one.
Flip over the top card to show the Queen that was on the face, then flip over the next card to show that the King has changed into her mate. Place both cards face up on the table.
4. Show the new mismatched pair at the bottom and repeat the above count, counting 6 cards this time. In the end, the top two cards again match.
Repeat once more, but once you turn over the top matching pair, immediately snap over the remaining pair to finish. No point in waiting, as they obviously must match!
