The LookOut team is always interested in making new connections and hearing what you're working on; inquiries and invitations to see work are welcome and can be directed to lookout@steppenwolf.org. Please note: our fall programming calendar is currently full but we are happy to meet with prospective artist who want to learn more about the series.

While staffing Goat Peak in Mazama last season I had many visitors who assumed I was renting the lookout, unaware that lookouts are still staffed. I even had an evening where a backpacker came up at midnight, saw the shutters up, and thought the lookout might be open for an overnight stay. He climbed the stairs and opened the trapdoor to the catwalk, but I heard him coming so I scared him a whole lot more than he scared me! He apologized profusely.

Be situationally aware, especially if fires are nearby. A lookouts most important job is fire detection and communication. During my rookie season last year at Goat I had multiple large fires near me and there were several days where I was very busy watching the fires, listening to the radio, aiding in radio relays, and talking to our District. Radio communication and dispatch requires a lot of attention so there were times when I had to close the lookout to focus on the situation at hand. Fires are very fluid and very taxing! If you visit a staffed lookout with fires nearby know that the lookout is probably very busy and not able to host visitors.

Pack it in, pack it out. It goes without saying but whether you camp near a lookout summit or make it a day hike, definitely pack out whatever you bring with you. Since I hike to my lookout, I have to pack out anything left behind.

It is situated on 8.2 acres of land at 5,118 feet.

Clark's Lookout State Park is located just 1 mile north of Dillon off Highway 91. Interpretive signs explain navigational methods used by the expedition. Make the short walk to the top of the lookout and you'll discover a magnificent view of the Beaverhead Valley and a monument showing the three compass readings that Captain Clark took on that day.

Available only in summer, the lookout is a wooden-frame structure, 14-by-14-feet in size, with wrap-around windows and deck. The lookout is furnished with two single beds with two additional mattresses, a table with three chairs, propane camp stove (propane provided), night lights, emergency lantern and dishwashing tubs. Drinking water is provided.

Deer Ridge Lookout, perched on a 40 foot timber frame, boasts excellent views of the Purcell mountain ranges of Northern Idaho, Canada and Montana. Located 24 miles northeast of Bonners Ferry, guests can enjoy magnificent scenery, hiking and wildlife watching. The lookout can be accessed by car and the gravel road to the lookout is well maintained.

Natural Features: The Lower Kootenai River Area (Bonners Ferry District) is bordered by the Purcell and Cabinet Ranges and the Montana Line on the east, the rugged Selkirk Range on the west, and the Canadian border to the north. The Kootenai River meanders north and west through the District, and the Moyie River joins it from the north. Peaks are moderate in elevation (6000 - 7000 ft.) but are rugged due to heavy glaciation. They are renowned for their mountaineering challenge. The lookout is perched atop Deer Ridge at an elevation of 4,755 feet. The view from the facility includes the rugged Purcell mountain peaks and the beautiful Moyie River Valley and Moyie Springs. Elk, deer and black bears are among the wildlife in the area. Please be aware of and practice bear safety.

Recreation: Hiking and viewing the scenery are two well-loved activities at the facility. Hiking trails from the lookout follow along the Deer Ridge and Ruby Ridge. Huckleberry picking is enjoyed from August to September. Fly fishing is available in the Moyie River, where anglers can cast for rainbow and brook trout. Make sure to check all regulations and secure all permits with the local Fish and Wildlife department before heading out.

Facilities: The 14' X 14' cabin has a wraparound catwalk, with a trap door that lifts for access to the tower's entrance staircase. The staircase is steep and is not recommended for small children. Furnishings include two twin beds, two chairs, a dresser and a table. A pit toilet is located 50 yards away. No water is available. Guests should bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing. Cooking is not permitted in the lookout. All cooking should be done outside and at ground level. Guests should bring a tarp to block the rain. Other items to bring include bedding, a first aid kit, towels and flashlights. The nearest town for groceries is Bonners Ferry, about 24 miles from the lookout.

McCart Lookout is a historic tower located on McCart Peak, east of Sula. It has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 1940s, including the stove, furniture, dishes and other small touches. It offers a unique chance for visitors to camp on a mountain peak, on the border of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, in a rustic, old-time setting. The tower provides spectacular views of the surrounding western Montana wilderness.

McCart Lookout is a historic "L4" lookout located on Mccart Peak east of the Bitterroot Valley. The lookout is a one room cabin with a bed platform suitable for two people. Bedding is not provided. The lookout can accommodate up to four. Others are welcome to tent camp in the area. The lookout measures 14ft.X14ft. with a 30 inch catwalk around the outside. There is a wood stove for heat. You may have to saw your own wood from dead and down material found nearby. A bow saw and ax are provided. A two burner propane camp stove and lanterns are provided. Propane is not provided, you will need to bring your own propane canisters. Utensils for cooking and eating are provided. There is no water available near the lookout so please bring your own water. An outdoor toilet serves the lookout. You will need to provide your own toilet paper. There is a small corral for two or three head of stock.

The trail to reach the tower continues south and joins the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which extends 3,100 miles across the United States, from the borders of Mexico to Canada. While it might take about six months to complete, a variety of day hikes and points of exploration are available within the area of the lookout tower. Trails can be enjoyed on foot or on horseback. Backpackers also enjoy the terrain. Aside from hiking and horseback riding, the area is replete with wildlife and offers scenic views. A lookout journal is kept inside, providing instructions of what to do in case of emergency or a storm. Danger from lightning is largely abated due to a lightning rod implanted at the structure.

From Missoula, Montana, travel south on Highway 93 for approximately 90 miles to Sula. Go east on Highway 472 for about 15 miles and then south on Forest Road 5765/McCart Road for about 6 miles to the Johnson Peak Trailhead. Hike about 1.5 miles to the lookout tower. e24fc04721
