I agree with the many that the book goes well beyond the line in connecting the (favored expression for some) husband’s penetration of his wife with God, with Christ, with the church, and with the gospel. The Song of Solomon, however much it has been read allegorically, was a collection of erotic-love songs between a man and a woman. The church’s use of this Song in its history has not always been wise. I am of an age to remember that a book by Craig Glickman, at least for many of us, changed the direction of evangelical readings of the Song. Many of us shifted from reading the Song of Solomon from allegory about Christ and the church to a love song between a man and a woman. It’s graphic enough, but it does not go where Josh Butler goes. Nor do I believe an allegorical reading does what that text was designed to do.

A prestigious byline is great but sometimes you can’t justify the amount of work you’d put in for them if you’re only going to get $250, of which around 30 percent goes to taxes. Plus, the pitching process is arduous. You can get your pitch approved and your piece filed, but your editor might be out of town or swamped, delaying the editing process and when you can invoice. The time from pitch to publishing to payment can easily take months. And that’s if they pay you on time: Once, a magazine named after a Bob Dylan or a Muddy Waters song took nine months to mail me a $400 check (they sent it after I tweeted about it, which basically risked my chance of ever writing there again). Freelance writers have to deal with these things fairly often. I’m a lucky case: I can comfortably pay my bills with freelancing and no outlet has ever fully ghosted me.

I know I’ve been giving this Superviolet LP a lot of love in this newsletter lately but honestly, the only way to get folks to check something out is to simply Not Shut Up About It. Ohio musician Steve Ciolek (who you might know from his work as frontman of the Sidekicks) called Superviolet’s debut album Infinite Spring because of that first day of the season when the weather is great and you get that euphoric feeling that anything is possible. It’s easy to get that feeling from the songwriting here. “I was just very in love while writing all of the songs,” Ciolek said in the press bio. “I was falling in love, being in love, getting married… Committed love just became this big theme of the songs, along with the sort of fearless honesty that comes with that.” Album of the year contender out Friday.

So this was the first song I wrote for my son. This was written when he was just, you know, brand new to the world. And so we still sing this song to him and to our daughter. And the record's been out now a couple of days. I'm getting a lot of people saying that they're singing this to their kids before they go to bed. And it's just the highest honor to be able to put into words some feelings so a parent can tell their kid or a kid can tell their parent that they love them and that they'll, you know, never leave them.

LOVELACE: Yeah. You know, this record is a love letter to my kids. In a world where technology is everywhere and you're distracted as a parent and - you know, this record to me, personally, has been a reminder to put my phone down and sit on the floor with my kids and sing songs and play games and just be in their life. And so I hope this record, as it is for me, is a reminder for all families to just get on the floor and sing with your kids because that's when your love really is the loudest.

[ Applause ] They've been on the front lines, doing their best to keep us safe and trying to make sure that for you, for us backstage, everywhere, we're able to keep doing this thing that we love, and I want to dedicate this next song to them because they are the angels of the last two years.

It's beautiful both ways. [ Laughter ] And so we stopped what we were doing, and we started recording this song, and I never -- I never could've imagined that this song would take me everywhere in the world, that it would be re-recorded by a thousand people, become kind of a modern classic, and it's a song that I think the reason people love it so much is that it could mean so many different things to so many people.

Cal starts spending time at the bar again, where Jacob finds him. Jacob confesses that he is in love with Hannah and has begun to re-evaluate his life as a result. Cal is happy that Jacob is a changed man but does not approve of Jacob and Hannah's relationship, having seen his former lifestyle. Jacob resigns without harboring any ill feelings; rather, he expresses his respect for Cal and praises him for being a great father.

While Bassett didn't go into specifics, he did make headlines this year thanks to his much rumored and oft-discussed love triangle with Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter. The speculation was fueled by a slew of social media posts and the release of Rodrigo's single "drivers license." Perhaps you've heard of it? In the song, the 18-year-old artist refers to a breakup. While Rodrigo has never explicitly confirmed who she's singing about on the track, many fans have assumed she's referencing Bassett. The theories continued to spread after Rodrigo released the rest of her Grammy-nominated album Sour.

In the song, Bassett sings, "And if you get to tell your truth then so do I/And it's cool if you want me to play the bad guy/Don't you dare act like I didn't love you/Don't go thinking that I didn't hurt too/Don't you ever wonder if I'm okay after all you've put me through/Half the s--t you're saying's only half true/Messing with my life as a career move/I can't help but wonder why you won't make it end/Guess you would never dare/You would never dare to waste a crisis."

RADNOR: I don't know that I'd ever heard that definition, but I love it. I think that's a wonderful definition. I'm going to use that from now on. In this case, the title of the album, "Eulogy," came from this idea that each song that I had written was a bit of an elegy or a eulogy to a part of myself, these parts of myself that had served me for a time and were no longer necessary. And I was kind of, you know, thanking them and laying them to rest.

"I grew up playing classical music and it's so special to get to play my songs almost in this chamber-like setting," Laufey says in her performance. Accompanied by a string quartet, the singer-songwriter's modern jazz-pop love songs soared at the Tiny Desk, the intimacy of our little corner only heightened its impact.

Youssef: I would love to see the Recording Academy continue to make and hold space for this type of music. It's important to preserve this legacy of songs for social change. We want to raise awareness that this award exists and let artists know how to submit their work for consideration.

We found that many artists have never written songs about social issues for a number of reasons, [like] the lack of support or fear of backlash. It's very difficult to balance the information of a complex concept with all the other creative nuances and stylistic decisions a writer has to make in order to actually have the song be great. Songs for social change are a unique art form that should be championed and supported for years to come both as a social movement and an artistic discipline. We would love to see more support for these types of programs in our [Chapters].

"'Love Love Love' is just about trying to spread as much love as you can, but that it starts with you standing up for and loving yourself," singer/songwriter Jim James tells GRAMMY.com. "I want to try and spread as much positivity as I or we can, which obviously isn't always easy."

I have piles of really cool song ideas that I love where, for whatever reason, it just stopped flowing. But that's also the cool thing is that sometimes I'll pick up an old idea from ten years ago and it will start to flow again. Magic. Or not. [Laughs.] e24fc04721
