Accessibility vs. Belonging
Accessibility vs. Belonging
What’s the Difference?
It’s easy to assume that if a student has access to learning, they’re included. But accessibility isn’t the same as belonging.
Accessibility means a student can participate—materials are readable, ramps are available, accommodations are met.
Belonging means a student feels seen, valued, and safe in the learning space. Their voice matters, their identity is respected, and their needs are anticipated—not just accommodated.
When we shift IEPs from simply meeting legal standards to creating spaces of belonging, we open new doors for student success.
