NYS Bilingual Glossaries

Links are found here for ELA, math, science and social studies glossaries.

ONLY 1:1 translation is allowed for modifying assessments.

Additionally, there are Guides of Literary Terms for ELA. They explain literary devices in multiple languages, but CANNOT be used on assessments.  You can find them below.

NOTE:  Examples are not always translated word for word, but are authentic to the culture being taught. (For example, some similes don't translate well.)

Cognates/Translanguaging/ Using the Home Language in School

How can someone who doesn't know the language use it for instruction.  Be aware of the idea of cognates.  These are words that look the same and mean the same, but can sound a bit "different" (like it's said with an accent).

Examples include: tímido for timid/shy

(Notice how some tier 2 words in English and cognates with tier 1 words in other languages!)

NYSED provided these Glossaries of Cognates to support this cross-linguistic transfer.

CAUTION:  Keep an eye out for false cognates. (sometimes words don't mean what you think:  example:  embarazada means pregnant, not embarrassed.)

NYSED has release further information on how translation is a support, not a solution for language learning.
