About the project
The UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.2 reminds the international community that every child deserves a strong start in life through access to quality ECCE. In multicultural contexts, such as South Africa and Norway, this goal calls for teacher education institutions to equip future ECCE teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to lead cultures of inclusion and belonging — where every person feels valued, and diversity is respected and recognized as a vital resource for learning and growth.
Project activities
The partnership between DMMH and SoE is built on more than 20 years of fruitful collaboration. Building on this strong foundation, the project will:
Enhance the quality of the exchange programme between SoE and DMMH.
Expand the collaboration to include student exchange opportunities at the master’s level.
Develop an internationally oriented study programme and a virtual platform that promote leadership training rooted in diversity and inclusion.
Engage in research and knowledge co-production.
Develop innovative learning methods, including co-supervision of master students and co-lecturing.
Through these activities, the project seeks to strengthen the connection between higher education, research, and professional practice.
By bringing together early childhood teachers, students, lecturers and scholars from both countries, we aim to enhance our collective contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals — particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Project period: 1. January 2024 - 31. December 2026
The project is funded by the UTFORSK programme/ Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, DMMH and SoE.
Experiencing a country’s practices firsthand is highly valuable. The researchers themselves had several eye-opening moments during their visit to the Norwegian kindergarten.
A collaborative project between DMMH and STADIO School of Education (SOE) in South Africa brings the perspective of diversity into leadership education for kindergartens.
DMMH and STADIO have collaborated in various ways for over 20 years. The current focus is the project “Learning to Lead,” funded through the UTFORSK program by the Directorate for Higher Education and Competence.
Launched in 2024, the project aims to develop expertise in leadership for social sustainability, highlighting diversity and inclusion, in kindergartens across multicultural societies. A key component is the development of new teaching resources—both digital and physical—that can be used by students in teacher education across borders.
