A family of self-loading pistols developed in 1972-1975 by Carl Beretta, Giuseppe Masetti and Vittorio Valle. It was adopted in 1980 . According to the results of the competition , the Beretta 92F 9 mm pistol replaced the M1911 caliber pistol in 1985 .45 ACP as a standard US Army pistol with the designation M9.
