The Cinderella Project Seattle was founded by a college student, Makeda Moorman Leahemariam who recognized the lack of resources and support available to youth in the community. Inspired by various Cinderella Projects in other states, especially the original organization in Vancouver, BC, the founder later connected and collaborated with other college students and graduates to create a network focused on giving back to young people in Seattle, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to celebrate important milestones with dignity and pride
The Cinderella Project Seattle is a student-led and volunteer ran organization in the process of becoming an official 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit (Pending as of 1/2026) created by students, for students. Our mission is to remove social barriers and promote inclusiveness and diversity. We recognize outstanding young people who have succeeded despite overwhelming odds and boost their confidence and self‑esteem through respect and positive mentorship.
According to the 2018 Seattle/King County Count Us In report, 22% of individuals experiencing homelessness were between 18 and 24, and 2% were under 18. That means hundreds of youths in our area are facing instability at the exact age when self-esteem and identity are taking shape.
Even more alarming, one in three unaccompanied youth identified as LGBTQ+, and 71% said they first experienced homelessness as a teen or young adult. These numbers show how isolation and exclusion are intertwined with identity and inequity. For some, prom or graduation isn’t just about the dress or suit — it’s about finally being seen.
The Cinderella Project Seattle targets youth at risk of social or economic under attachment by promoting connection through inclusion, dignity, and celebration.
By applying Mendelson et al.’s ecological model, the project addresses these inequities at multiple levels
individual (self-worth), interpersonal (peer/mentor support),
institutional (school event access),
community (inclusive partnerships),
and policy (advocating for equitable school programming).
The Cinderella Project Seattle establishes an environment in which all young people, regardless of race, income, or gender identity, can access resources, experience affirmation, and participate in milestone events with pride.
We provide comprehensive support to youth ages 13–21 across Seattle, including free formalwear for prom and graduation, essential school supplies, health and wellness items, and access to community programs. Our student-led team organizes and coordinates donation pickups, sorting and organizing supplies, event setup and hosting, mentorship opportunities, and outreach initiatives to ensure that every young person can participate fully and feel empowered, included, and celebrated.

The message behind the movement is that advocacy tells young people, ‘You are enough. You belong here. You deserve to celebrate your life.’ And that’s what advocacy should be about, not just providing resources, but creating moments where people feel valued, connected, and free to be themselves.
The Cinderella Project is built through community collaboration. We welcome partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders who are passionate about supporting youth.

The goal of The Cinderella Project Seattle is to establish an official home for our organization within the Seattle area to better serve local youth and students. We plan to relaunch the project through a pilot event featuring a formalwear pop-up and a youth-led organizing component
Implementation steps:
Partner with local nonprofits, Black and Brown-owned businesses, and LGBTQ+ organizations for donations and outreach.
Involve youth volunteers in program design, marketing, and distribution to foster leadership and empowerment.
Collaborate with mental health counselors and community advocates to ensure holistic support, not just material aid.
Organize community events such as fashion shows, Cinderella Days, Cinderella Boutique, and community service events.
Our plan over the next two to three years is to get started with internships and scholarships to further support Seattle youth.
